A Cool Welcome to Spring

Lilac Leaves Opening

Spring is slowly coming as The Earth once again works her magic, bringing us out of winter with a burst of new life. The above photo taken yesterday afternoon is of the small Lilac Bush in front of my cottage. Just about 30 minutes before, the winds were high, snow was falling and the sun was shining. That's what Spring 2023 looks like in Ashland. It's been snowing here for months, not only at higher elevations but on the valley floor, a very rare occurrence these past years. I couldn't be happier for the cold wet weather and the heavy snow pack in the mountains. Like many in Southern Oregon, I am hoping our long wet and cold winter helps prevent summer wildfires.

If you look above at the lilac photo you'll see some electric wires. Until early January there were 3 beautiful, large Red Cedar Trees, home to many squirrels and birds. The trees were situated beautifully in the lot next door, in a very hot location which gets summer sun all afternoon. They not only offered shelter and homes to wildlife, but welcome cooling shade during our extremely hot dry summers. In early January I awoke to the sound of chainsaws from next door. The saws ran for hours. By afternoon the trees were gone, now tall piles of cut logs with a pungent smell of fresh cedar bark permeating the air. I cried on and off for days with the loss of these beautiful trees.

The 3 trees served as shelter for our urban wildlife and kept this hot downtown residential area cool during our extreme summer heat. I wonder how we humans will move forward in creating understanding and respectful relationship with all The Earth, taking care of one another in balanced times and through climate extremes? I cannot answer this question alone. I will continue to do what I do through my lifestyle considerations. I will keep going to my sit spot at Lithia Park, allowing myself time for intimate connection with nature; quiet contemplation; clearing my mind and listening to my heart and to the words of wisdom The More than Human World is speaking in every moment.

Earth Day Shabbat Fo*rest Bathing

Earth Day Shabbat Fo*rest Bathing

The theme of this year's Earth Day is, "Invest in Our Planet." In this facilitated practice we shift from our established, often passive surface-level engagement of nature to a deeper embodied, intentional and reciprocal relationship with The Earth. With this new perspective comes a depth of understanding-cultivating feelings of awe, gratitude, peace and an experience of "falling in love" with nature in a new  way. What we deeply love, we protect.

Please join Wild Wellness Guide for a slow afternoon of rest and nature relation. Forest Bathing is a contemplative and playful practice. Through a series of sensory "Invitations", we'll slow down, unplug, relax and rest our active minds. We'll step out of our normal sense of time and orientation towards "doing" into an embodied way of "being", connecting in a new way with The Earth, ourselves and others as we rest and renew. We complete our experience with a wild forest tea ritual.

There are 12 spaces available.

Slow Time for Wild Wellness Guide

With the arrival of Spring, I'm waking up and slowly coming out of deep hibernation following a year like no other-a year of great loss; deep healing in the family constellation; exponential inner growth; surprising gifts and more love than I could have ever imagined.

My guiding practice, Wild Wellness Guide, is also awakening from a much needed pause. I am so grateful for the gift of time and for listening to my inner voice to move through life as slowly as needed to recover from the magnitude of the past year. I am being called more and more to write and am allowing myself to listen in to what I need to offer to myself and my community at this time.
