Things I found, things I am saving for winter

Hi there!

I found some treasures for you:

3 Solutions to My Broken Picture Book Dummy

I am currently working on revising a picture book that has gone out for submittals without success. With the help of my critique group, I identified a few things that I could change despite the number of times I have revisited it.

Here are the three solutions I settled on:

  1. Strengthen the ending of the story by creating a new throughline that connects the beginning to the end.
  2. Revise the artwork to reflect the tone of the story better.
  3. Introduce the problem more clearly from the outset.

When I reflect on my dummy, it is incredible how generic the solutions may sound when you break them down. But it is essential to revisit the rules of thumb at every stage of the process. It is also helpful to have a fresh set of eyes review your work.
