I'd like to express my gratitude to all our MBSR class participants and MBSR graduates for attending our silent retreat last Sunday!  This was the first retreat I've ever lead where we had the opportunity to experience, first hand, how to be with the "very" unpleasant, when many witnessed the assault of a homeless man in the middle of Andrews Avenue.  That happened at the end of our third mindful walk in Stranahan Park, at a time when many of you were reporting a steadily increasing openness to experience as the day was progressing.  To witness that on our way back in to our last meditation of the day, and to drop back into stillness was, to say the least, a challenge.  I could see expressions of anger, judgment, fear, and sadness in your faces.  My MBSR teacher training taught me that, although it is important to stick to the curriculum, we need to be flexible and provide "what is needed in the present moment".  By using a combination of metta phrases, gentle stretching to return to the body, and awareness of our thoughts and emotions, I believe we were able to let life live through us.  Thank you for your staying with us, and for putting your trust in us and the program!

Meditation practices have become more widely accepted in the United States over the past 20 years, largely due to extensive research that shows its effectiveness for reducing stress and negative emotions in a myriad of conditions, including chronic pain, cancer, cardiovascular disease, depression, and anxiety.  In this experiential workshop, participants will be guided through 3 mindful meditation practices used in evidence-based mindfulness-based interventions: Body Scan, Mindful Eating, and Sitting Meditation.  Following each meditation, participants will explore its effects on the mind/body connection.  Then we will discuss the latest research that explains how each practice affects the brain to reduce suffering and enhance well-being. Diets don't work!  Eat Right Now is a 28-day app-based program that could really help improve your relationship with food.  It was created by Judson Brewer, interim director at the Center for Mindfulness at UMASS.  I am accepting sign-ups for my weekly live group classes that will support those participating in this program, beginning April 9.  Come to my free orientation on Monday April 2nd from 6 to 7 pm via Zoom, to find out more about it!

For all MBSR graduates, we now have a new 8-week series that delves deeper into the science of mindfulness. We will meet on Tuesday evenings, beginning June 11, from 7:15 to 8:45 via Zoom.  We will have 15 minutes of practice, 15 minutes of inquiry, and 60 minutes of discussion on a range of topics. Cost is $240 for the 8 weeks.  We would love to see you there!
