Things I found, things I am saving for winter

Look at the treasures I found:

  • My kids chose today’s coloring page from a zine I created a while back. Find the download link below.
  • I put a digital print on my shop. Basically, you purchase the digital file and print it however you wish. There is some demand for this kind of thing because I regularly get questions about whether or not I can provide digital files of my art. I likely won't offer digital files for all my prints, but we'll see if the demand is as high as it seems.

Unlined Observation Journals

Something magical happens when you replace typical lined paper with a blank page. It's as if the very act of doing so fills the space with possibility. The lines disappear and leave a void for our thoughts, dreams, and stories. A blank sheet of paper is a blank canvas with fewer restrictions on size and matter. As a result, there is more room for creativity and self-expression.

The lack of lines can be both liberating and daunting. There are no boundaries or limits on what you can create on the one hand. But on the other hand, the possibilities are endless, and it can be challenging to know where to start. I am a big fan of giving children unlined observation journals and assisting their progress.

This is my daughter's newest veterinarian observation journal. I told her she could record observations about animals she sees outside and our pets. So she created this one to record observations about our new dog. Some observations include when the dog lost a baby tooth, the color and health of her teeth, how often we are brushing, and behaviors while grooming.

The benefits of unlined paper really shine through here because your child can essentially "scrapbook" the journal together and make it their own. I give my daughter the tools she needs and prompt her with ideas for her journal. We create text using free online scrapbooking tools, and we cut out letters from magazines. She writes longer text by hand and draws pictures.

You can see how her journal has taken on its own personality, just like my daughter. Unlined paper allows for more creativity and self-expression.

If you are looking for a way to encourage your child's imagination, ditch the lined paper and try unlined instead!
