Shore Life 1 - Short listed for the Royal Photographic Society International Photography Exhibition 164

Hello

What a strange summer we are having. Extreme heat, more covid, and parliamentary shenanigans. All are unwelcome distractions from normal creative routines. How to stay focused amidst all of this noise?

Before I know it Open Studios will arrive, and if I am not careful I will not be  ready in time. To help get around this I am trying new ways to motivate and organise myself, including a hand drawn weekly planner in my notebook.

Sitting down each Monday morning and working out what I would like to achieve in the week is a way of being sure that I commit not only to making new work, but also to keeping in touch with all the individuals who are supporting my activities whether it be on social media, attending workshops or just enjoying my photography.

It is helping to stop me drifting aimlessly through the week. And I get to tick things off when they are done!

I usually bite off more than I can chew, but at least I know what needs carrying forward to the next week.

EVENTS

I am delighted to be selected for the Rye Society of Artists Summer Exhibition, opening this weekend. It is always a vibrant and colourful exhibition with many local artists' work. The image featured in their poster is by painter Nick Archer, who I recently collaborated with in the print room at Rye Creative Centre.

IT WOULD BE LOVELY TO SEE YOU THERE...

Open studios at Rye Creative Centre is coming up soon. I am so happy that I am in the country for the occasion this year, and will be there on Friday evening and all day Saturday to chat about and show you my work. There is always such a wonderful vibe as around 30 artists open their studios and put on a carefully curated exhibition in the spacious old gymn.

CURRENT PROJECTS

I am working on a new book about the forests of vancouver where my family live. It doesn't have a title yet, but it is coming together slowly in my publishing software.

I am enjoying finding images that work together on the page, finding connections between shapes, light and dark, and the small details that give pleasure in the immense forest of endless firs and pines.

I start by gathering images and printing them out really small so that I can experiment with layouts on a table top. There are endless permutations, so I take photographs of different combinations and use these when I start my layout on my computer.

Making a book takes me several months -  I hope to get this one finished before Christmas!
