Things I found, things I am saving for winter

Cory's Pinecone Mound

Hi Fam! Here are some treasures I gathered this week:

Kate Who Tamed The Wind Cover

Watercress

One of the most ambitious things a parent could hope for is that their children will learn to appreciate what they have. Watercress is about learning this lesson and about honoring the memory of family.

The book does not have an overt message, instead, it is beautiful and subtle like Jason Chin's illustrations. It feels like the author is describing a personal experience. The girl is real, the family is real, the feelings are real.

The moral is backed up by a strong story.

The hardest part about writing or illustrating is putting an idea, image, or story from your mind to paper.

Creation is the transposition of something with only the spark of substance into something familiar and easy to understand for your audience. It is plucking the ethereal from your mind and making it tangible.

During that process, it is easy for an idea to lose some of its original quality. Like the sound difference you hear between analog to digital media.

"Stay faithful to the stories in your head." -Paula Hawkins

While mediums like cassette tapes and mp3s sacrifice sound for benefits like physical space and convenience, other mediums like records can pick up the entire sound wave in its original form.

Explore different mediums to get your ideas on paper. Try painting, sculpture, collage, oral storytelling—see if any of these can convey your ideas in a way that feels just like the moment you had them.
