First Nations people need our help as they deal with the effects of COVID-19

Perhaps you are already aware that the First Nations People have suffered great levels of hardships and death during the COVID-19 pandemic. I have the honor of regularly working with several nations but, especially, with the Navajo people. God joined me with a tribal leader, Apostle Fred Smith, a number of years ago; and I have developed many lasting friendships on the reservations. Yesterday, I checked in with Chief Fred to see how things were going for him.

The report broke my heart.

After hearing his account, I knew that I needed to engage on a higher level of prayer and support; and I am putting the need before you in the hope that YOU WILL ALSO WANT TO HELP.

Below are a few bits of information that Fred shared with me.

On Apostle Fred’s Navajo reservations, necessary resources like hospitals, grocery stores, running water, and electricity are lacking to deal with the pandemic.

  • Thirty percent of his people have no running water or electricity
  • Boarder towns (those towns nearest the reservations which normally are the source of food and pharmaceuticals) are closed to residents of the reservations
  • Fred has personally lost three of his family members and many friends in the ministry

Apostle Fred’s ministry extends to the following multiple reservations:

  • The Arapaho tribe on the Windriver reservation in Wyoming
  • The Apache reservations in Arizona
  • The Paiute reservation in Nevada

  • The Colorado tribes in the Yuma Arizona area
  • The Navajo nation, and the Hopi tribes in Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah

Apostle Fred reports, “We have been working with a dear friend of mine from Tuba City, Arizona who lost 80% of her congregation to this virus. Another family whose mom and dad both died leaving a young Down Syndrome boy all to himself. Many of our elders that can’t speak English have no clue to what is happening. They don't understand the need to wear masks, gloves, or the importance of social distancing. All they have is a Native word when spoken that means "Beware of the cough that kills".

According to Apostle Fred, national statistics report the deaths of 3,245 Navajo people with 1,391 of those deaths in New Mexico and Utah where he ministers.

THIS APOSTLE OF GOD AND THE TEAM THAT LABORS WITH HIM NEED OUR HELP.

Although we are not able to be there in person to give our aid, we can pray, and we can give of our finances.

A National Day of Prayer is being organized for the First Nations People on May 31, 2020. He will be sending me more specifics on that event, and I will share those with you.

Until then, he is requesting hat we pray for “God to stop this virus from killing our native people.” Please join your voice in that petition.

And – give! PLEASE GIVE!

Below you will find the information on the method by which you can contribute. I will serve you to collect the funds and forward all the donations to Apostle. He will serve you to see that the funds we collect are used to bring necessary supplies and aid to his Navajo tribe and to the other reservations on which he works. Please pray and give!
