April 1, 2018 Mindful News Mindfulness: Does it help with Addictive Behaviors? Last week, I was honored to speak at the Annual NOAP (National Organization of Alternative Programs) Conference in St. Augustine, Florida. NOAP was created to promote public safety through participation of potentially impaired healthcare professionals in monitored rehabilitation and recovery. I was surprised to learn the following: 1. Approximately 9.4% of U.S. Citizens ages 12 or older use illicit drugs 2. More than 702,000 Americans have died from drug overdoses from 1999 to 2017 – about 10 percent of them in 2017 alone. 3. Opioids were involved in over two-thirds of overdose deaths in 2017. 4. Of all the treatments available, the relapse rate is approximately 60% (in the year after treatment). We are now learning that mindful meditation programs, such as MBSR , MBRP , and MORE , can help individuals suffering from addiction. In a recent meta-analysis published in the J ournal of Substance Abuse Treatment , Li and colleagues found significant small-to-large effects of mindfulness treatments in reducing the frequency and severity of substance misuse, the intensity of craving for psychoactive substances the severity of stress This is great news! Although more research is needed to examine the mechanisms by which mindfulness training exerts their effects, mindfulness treatment for substance abuse appears to be a promising intervention. Self-compassion involves responding to these difficult thoughts and feelings with kindness, sympathy and understanding so that we soothe and comfort ourselves when we’re hurting.
