December 2023 Core Virtues News

The joy of the holidays is upon us! As children anticipate gifts under the tree or beside the menorah, Core Virtues schools encourage children to give the gift of themselves. Our December virtues of generosity and hospitality, charity, and service take on special meaning this month when the Salvation Army rings its bells for those in need.  See our Holidays tabs (Hanukkah and Christmas) for many books that enhance a child's sense of wonder and joy.

What's New:  A New Home!

We at Core Virtues are grateful for our hospitable new steward institution, Hillsdale College. On November 1, Hillsdale College, with its extensive network of affiliated K-12 schools and comprehensive resources for teachers, school leaders, and school boards, became the new home for Core Virtues. Hillsdale’s K-12 Program Guide, a comprehensive curriculum for K-12 schools, and other excellent publications such as Tried and True: A Primer on Sound Pedagogy, make the Hillsdale approach the perfect fit for Core Virtues. Stay tuned for more details as our partnership unfolds.

Heroes: William and Catherine Booth

Picture

This month we spotlight William and Catherine Booth, Founders of the Salvation Army.  Born in England in 1829 and married in 1855, the couple answered the call of their faith to serve the poor, homeless, and alcohol-addicted of London's streets. Their work spread, continuing today in 133 countries, and making the Salvation Army one of the world's most beloved charities.

What Else Is New: St. Nicholas Tab

Picture

Core Virtues offers resources to faith-based schools on our Schools of Faith tab. Throughout 2023, we have been developing a new section for Christian schools: SAINT OF THE MONTH. Chosen in accord with our cycle of virtues, this tab tells the stories of great men and women of faith. And fittingly, this December we are telling the story of the original Santa Claus! Public schools may also find this tab of interest as they teach students about the historical origins of old St. Nick, the generous bishop who aided a family in need. Check out our St. Nicholas book listings here.
