June 2022 News from Core Virtues

Picture

Free at last, free at last!  In this short and final academic month, let's send our students off on a high note.  This month the Core Virtues program highlights uplifting stories of exemplary lives.  We feature a brand new picture book biography of Joanne Simpson, the first woman to receive a doctorate in meteorology.  Her extraordinary life is chronicled in Breaking Through the Clouds -- which, as a 1940s pilot, wartime instructor of Air Force pilots, meteorologist and woman -- she did!

We'll take a break from newsletter publication in the month of July, and use this opportunity to wish all our Core Virtues students, teachers, administrators, and parents a healthy, joyful and restorative vacation.

What's New?  CV to UD!!

This is big news!  Core Virtues is celebrating its own Commencement after almost thirty years.  The Core Virtues Foundation is pleased to announce that as of July 1, the University of Dallas will become the new steward of the Core Virtues program.  This is marvelous news, as the University will have young talent to support and expand CV initiatives.  And fear not:  the website you count on will remain; read here to learn all about the exciting transition.

By presidential proclamation, June has been recognized for years as national immigrant heritage month.  This is a rich vein of children's literature and the American story.  Even if days in the classroom are few, check out our recommendations.  We're particularly fond of Emma's Poem, which tells the story of immigration in 1880s-1910s and Emma Lazarus's attempt to capture the spirit of the nation in "The New Colossus," which is emblazoned on the base of the Statue of Liberty:  Her words ("send me your poor, your tired, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free") have stirred American hearts for years.

Hero of the Month

We put a spotlight on the national pastime of baseball this month, and one memorable hero is Jackie Robinson, who broke the big league color barrier. This touching picture book was written by Jackie's daughter and chronicles the unlikely friendship of Jackie and Steven Satlow, a Jewish third grader who is in awe of "the hero two doors down" the block.
