The Making of 3X4

Ivan Brunetti in conversation with TOON's Françoise Mouly

Françoise Mouly (FM): Young children are looking for schemas, ways of understanding the world. That’s what a story can do for them, give them an architecture that they can retain and reread — and 3X4 does this very well. It’s like a comic strip, but with deeply satisfying humor that explodes the structure and then puts it back together for you to understand. There’s not too many books that combine genuine humor and math. 3X4 approaches it in terms of understanding the structure of making sets.

Ivan Brunetti (IB): I’m just an obsessive list-maker. Every single project I do starts with a list. I think coming to America from Italy and having to make sense of everything all over again, I had to try to put things into some kind of logic.

FM: Have you heard any feedback on your first TOON book, Wordplay?

IB: I’ve always thought that if a kid like something they’re being honest about it. A friend’s daughter, who is too old for Wordplay,  said “It’s a baby book, but it’s funny.”

FM: That’s a nice review!

IB: YES! She likes it and re-reads it. It’s not her reading level but she loves the humor.

Writer Alex Dueben interviews Ivan Brunetti for Smash Pages

"3×4 is about numbers and math, but also about art. It focuses on the children that readers might remember from his first book and gives them a new homework assignment. I asked him about how he worked on the new book, the relationship between art and numbers, and what he’s thinking about next." –Alex Dueben
