ISSUE #4:

Onscreen Sideshow Acts & Chicago

Picture

Chicago Movie Tours devotes the week of May 4, 2020, to onscreen sideshow acts and Chicago.

Check out the week's activities below!

Bozo & Old Hollywood

It's Chicago, so our formal contract with the city requires us to start a week on onscreen sideshow performers with Bozo the Clown. ;-)

But rather than talk about Bozo's successful franchise on Chicago's WGN (1960-2001), we consider his lesser-known performances as a kids' birthday party clown for old Hollywood

    Clown & Magician Trivia!

Fair warning: a few of this week's trivia questions about onscreen sideshow acts and Chicago are kinda tough.

But if you're a fan of stand-up comedians and magicians from the Chicago area, old movies about murderous circus performers, and/or fast-food clown mascots, give the quiz a whirl.

      Tour: Tragic Circus Train Wreck

For this week's virtual walking tour, we spent a couple of days videoing at Showmen's Rest, a mass grave for about 60 circus performers who died in a horrific 1922 circus train wreck just outside Chicago.

In the 10-minute walking tour of Showmen's Rest, we pay special attention to the site's place in film history, and we talk briefly about Jay Marshall, a magician and ventriloquist who appeared on the small screen numerous times.

      How many clowns?!

#TBT to July 1992, when Kelli's husband bought a statue of a clown that, over years, inadvertently spawned more than 80 clown figurines! ⁣

"By the time I met him in 1999, my husband had amassed more than 80 clowns of all types, shapes, and sizes. I won’t lie: my first visit to his one-bedroom apartment was somewhat startling. Instead of books filling his shelves, there were only clowns."
