McCloskey has a hard time picking his favorite ant. “I kind of like the acrobat ant,” he said. “The acrobat ant walks around with its back section up high, so people think it’s dead. It looks like it’s running around backwards, but it’s really running forwards." He's also fond of the Trapjaw Ant -- a carnivorous ant found in the tropics with the fastest bite in the animal kingdom.

McCloskey wasn't always such an expert on ants. Last year, when he was giving a talk at Tacoma Park Library a girl named Francie asked him if his book would feature Exploding Ants. McCloskey didn't believe there was such a thing, but promised her that if he found any exploding ants he would put her name in his book.

As it turns out, Francie was right! Exploding ants are native to Malaysia and Brunei and explode when threatened to defend their fellow ants, spraying a sticky poison that immobilizes their enemies. McCloskey dedicated the book to Francie in their honor.

Ahead of the release of his new book, Ants Don't Wear Pants!, the always intrepid Kevin McCloskey traveled down to Florida to visit Professor Andrea Lucky's ant camp, The Lucky Lab.

Learn more about The Lucky Lab!

The Lucky Lab in Jacksonville, Florida, run by a professor of entomology named Andrea Lucky, aims to study and combat those invasive ants. McCloskey, who teaches illustration at Kutztown University, went out there in July to get up close and personal with the ants. He wasn’t a complete stranger to ant hunting, a colleague of his at Kutztown who studies insects had trained him on a pooter -- a tube used to suck up and capture the ants.

Kevin McCloskey is the author of the critically acclaimed TOON Books Giggle and Learn series and teaches illustration at Kutztown University in Pennsylvania. He painted these ant pictures on recycled grocery bags because, just like ants, he believes in recycling.
