September News from Core Virtues

"Try to remember the kind of September when life was slow, and oh so mellow...."  Well, that's not this one!  Welcome to the new 2020 school year, Core Virtues teachers!  Whether you are in-seat, on-site, or remote from your living room, let's make this September one to remember with a laser focus on learning -- especially the key virtues of respect, responsibility, and friendship.  Our blog this month puts RESPECT at the forefront.

What's New?

We've been working hard to enhance Morning Gathering offerings with our Holiday Tab.  In September "respect" is our major theme, and nationally we spotlight respect for labor, for any job well done, no matter how humble or unattractive.  Click here for our new Labor Day tab, which celebrates contributions of American workers (some of whom were children) through the decades.

Grade 4-6 Suggested Book List

Many schools just embarking on the Core Virtues program are looking for a basic book list drawn from our site to launch them.  Last year we introduced a K-3 list, and we've just completed our 4-6 suggestions.  Check it out at: Suggested Book Lists

Professional Development with Cherokee Charter Academy (CCA)

We welcome South Carolina's Cherokee Charter Academy to the roster of Core Virtues Schools this year. On August 8, the Core Virtues Foundation had the opportunity to do remote professional development with Director Tessa Waldrep and the school's twenty-seven teachers.  We enjoyed ourselves immensely, and CCA is up and running as of August 17 with 482 enthusiastic Kindergarten to Fifth Graders. Go Patriots!

Online Resources:

At a time when we are unusually dependent on remote learning, online resources can be very important tools to deliver quality literature.  New and excellent resources abound.  If your classroom has a white-board and a computer, these sites may help you project your Morning Gathering to the front of the room.

Storyline Online

Sponsored by the SAG-AFTRA Foundation (Screen Actors Guild), this free service is available on Youtube or Schooltube. It offers many of the books we recommend expertly read by professional actors with the original artwork sometimes animated. Their clips can be projected in a classroom or read on an ipad with or without the text on the pages.

To keep your Morning Gathering current and lively, we post new literary selections almost daily. We invite you to help us. If there are virtue-themed books you love, that you don't find here, please send your suggestions to us at [email protected].
