June 2023 Core Virtues News

It's time to celebrate the near-completion of a school year, patting kids and ourselves on the back for academic and character strides.  Nothing sends students off to vacation with a greater spring in their step than stories of the greatness that may one day be theirs.  So check out our June heroes tab, which includes a fabulous new biography of Antarctic explorer Tom Crean.  And don't forget: it's also Immigrant Heritage Month, a time to celebrate our rich roots. Finally, we're encouraging you to submit your book and poster orders for the fall early!

What's New? A Virtues Index Tab for Customized Sequences

We have a new "Virtues Index" tab.  Most Core Virtues schools use our proposed three year sequence, but some have customized their cycles of virtue to align with seasonal or site-specific needs.  If your school, for example, has chosen to focus on "diligence" in February (rather than October), this chart will link you to recommended texts.

Immigrant Heritage Month

Picture

Our nation is and always has been a nation of immigrants. Our Immigrant Heritage Month page showcases some well known and lesser known biographies. Watch Me is the story of Joe Richards, who came to the US as a child from refugee camps in war-torn Sierra Leone. He aspired to be a physician. Dr. Richards' is a modern times story of determination, adversity, and triumph in his new home.

Dancing Hands is a Civil War era biography. Prodigy pianist Teresa Carreno was composing music at age 6; she and her family fled war in Venezuela and made their new home in New York City.  Diligent practice and talent took her all the way to the White House to play for President Lincoln in our country's darkest hour.
