Two New Scenes in the Cumberland River Series

Picture

Fall Creek Falls is the highest waterfall east of the Rockies with a 256 foot drop. The outflow winds up in the Caney Fork River, which empties into the Cumberland  River at Carthage (TN). It is protected within the 26,000 acre state park bearing its name along with two other major falls and several smaller ones like Coon Creek shown here. In the summer months, these falls slow to a trickle between rain storms. I lived in the park for six months during my tenure as a regional naturalist with  Tennessee State Parks.

These two scenes will be a part of a one-man exhibit of 25 paintings at the Circle Art Library in downtown Crossville (TN) during January and February. A public reception is planned for Jan. 17, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. (CST).

August Afternoon At Leatherwood Ford is one of the latest additions to the Cumberland River Series. The scene is on the largest branch of the river, Big South Fork, which originates on the Cumberland Plateau in Scott County (TN) and flows northward with a precipitous drop before emptying into Lake Cumberland in Kentucky. The wild tributary flows through the Big South Fork National Recreation Area. A low-water bridge was once the only way in this region to ford the river without getting wet. This family cools off in the mid-day heat of August.

“Thin Ice” depicts three Canada geese as they swim through a touch of early winter. Thin ice crackles across the marsh.  Deer in the distance watch warily as their visitors rest during a long flight southward.

The framed 11x14" original oil painting has been donated to Ducks Unlimited for a fundraising auction at the D.U. de Mexico's 45th annual convention in Barceló Maya Grand Resort on the Riviera Maya, Mexico, Feb. 10-14, 2019. Ducks Unlimited de México (DUMAC) has restored and enhanced more than 1.9 million acres throughout Mexico in areas that are important for wintering waterfowl and other wetland-dependent species. There are 28 areas considered key wetlands for waterfowl in Mexico, and all are included in the DU Continental Conservation Plan. Canada geese can be found throughout northern Mexico. Anyone interested in bidding may contact Larry.

Visit Discovery Park of America in Union City (TN) January-March to see Larry's artwork, and it’s a great place to spend the day with the kids to see dinasours, vintage cars or an Atlas rocket. Larry is the featured artist for the winter months. A public reception will be held January 10, 5:30-7:30. There are eight paintings featured in the show including the one above, Arkansas Weatherbirds.

SOLD OUT – Tennessee Wilderness: A Legacy Endures, published two years ago, is no longer available. The award-winning 206-page book by Larry Richardson and Tom Wood may be reprinted later this year.

"My idea of Christmas, whether modern or old-fashioned, is very simple: loving others. Come to think of it, why do we have to wait for Christmas to do that?"  Bob Hope
