GET READY FOR ORMONDALE'S SCIENCE FAIR AND INVENTION CONVENTION!

The Fair starts on Tuesday February 5th, when students can bring their displays to the Ormondale MUR just before school.

Ormondale's Science Night will be held on Thursday the 7th from 6pm-7:00 pm. It's a time when families can come to view the displays, and hear what our resident Scientists and Inventors have been up to! Please plan to come a little early and have dinner, as there will be food trucks Gabe's Burgers and Mister-Softee NorCal (soft frozen ice cream) and just added, JUDIE’S LOCOS TACOS!  Food Trucks will be serving on the black top one hour before the event.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Interested in volunteering at the Science Fair?? We are looking for volunteers to write Commentary Notes on the Science Fair Boards, and with the Make it and Take it event which will be held on Tuesday the 5th at 1:30pm. Make it and Take it event is a special session for students who need a little more support to create a Science Fair display so they can participate in the event. Please contact Mrs. Rusch ([email protected]) for more details.

Please plan to pick up projects 7:00 at the end of the Science Fair Night.

superfood of the month!

Shout Out for Brussel Sprouts!

By Ms. Grech’s Second Graders

Introducing this month’s amazing superfood, BRUSSEL SPROUTS! This hearty veggie grows in the winter and loves the cold weather. They start as a seed and are grown in a greenhouse before being planted in a garden or field. They are very healthy for our bodies and nutritious.

Did you know that one cup full of brussel sprouts has 4 times as much vitamin C as an orange? They are also good for your heart and help protect our bodies from cancer.

This yummy vegetable can be cooked many different ways such as roasting, boiling, stir-frying and steaming.  Some people even eat them raw in salads.  BEWARE… don’t overcook them or they will begin to smell like rotten eggs.

Here’s a joke for you to guess.

Q: What is green and goes to a summer camp?

A: A Brussels' Scout!

We hope you love this month’s superfood recipe!

CONGRATULATIONS ROBOTICS

Three cheers to the CMS Robotics Competition team for finishing up their second season of competition. The team worked hard to build competitive robots and attended 2 competitions this year. Thank you to Mrs. Richard for all of her energy building a team for CMS these past few years and congratulations to all the students for their efforts at the competitions and weekly build sessions.

Mrs. Richard did an amazing job and, happily, has helpers to thank. “We could not have done as well as we did if it was not for the help of the following volunteers, Randy True and Leslie Peters. Randy's engineering knowledge was helpful in solving problems. Leslie's years of experience with running her own team was indispensable. I would like to thank all the parents for snacks and helping with supervision at competitions, the Portola Valley School District for the opportunity to offer after school robotics. Finally, I would like to thank PVSF for providing the funds to build and expand this program.

Ask a student, or Mrs. Richard, for more information about robotics if your daughter or son has interest in this engaging team with a great coach.

8th graders: Connor Engel, Noah Satusky, Nicholas Zamboldi, Devlin Murphy, Kian Murray, Evan Demas 7th graders: Aidan Vaughan, Paulo Freccia, Cole Trenchard, Brian Christensen  6th graders: Milo Pitera, Lucas Farrell-Straight

way to go stem fair!

This year the STEM Fair had 74 projects, individual and team, throughout all five grade levels. Lots of fun science energy around the campus this week.

STEM Fair could not have happened with the help of all the Science Teachers at Corte Madera School, Jeanne Rusch, Rupal Sutaria, Anne Gronet and Teresa Richard. We also want to thank all of our wonderful volunteer  judges: Joshua Berke, Karyn Ellis and Damon Schor. The time - and brain power spent on judging the projects - was greatly apprecitaed.

Next up is the Maker Fair on April 12th!

Volunteers are needed to help Redwood City middle schoolers with literacy. One hour a week is all it takes to make difference for these kids, many of whom struggle with their reading.

You can become an important, trusted adult in the kids’ lives when you make this commitment to tutor them throughout the remainder of the school year.  Training is provided and you can also shadow with one of our volunteers before you decide.

PALO ALTO BABE RUTH BASEBALL PREP SEASON REGISTRATION OPEN!

Palo Alto Babe Ruth Baseball invites you to register for our upcoming 2019 Prep Season. There are no tryouts or cuts, so every player who registers is guaranteed a spot to play in this season which runs from March to May. Our Prep Season is a developmental league designed to help younger players develop their skills on the full-sized diamond and prepare players for our 15U Season. It includes two weeks of preseason clinic-style practices, a player draft, and an eight week season featuring one practice and two games per week for each team culminating in a fun City Championship Tournament. The league features minimum playing time rules to allow all players a chance to play in each game.

The Prep League is open to all 7th and 8th graders, as well as any high school student not on a high school baseball roster. Full refunds are issued if a player makes his/her high school team and is unable to play Prep, so there is no risk in registering. Registration closes Feb 15, but $400 early-bird pricing ends Jan 1For more information, visit our website at www.pababeruth.org or contact Chris Lillios at [email protected].

mountain camp

Making the world a better place by positively impacting campers and staff though the camp experience.

For the past four years, Mountain Camp Woodside has partnered with the Stanford University Graduate School of Education and Challenge Success to study how participation in our summer camp provides children with opportunities to develop critical 21st century learning skills. The results have been overwhelmingly positive and confirm what we have always believed - camp provides outstanding opportunities for kids to practice empathy, creative problem solving, personal responsibility, self-control, perseverance, teamwork and communication.

We encourage you to take a few minutes to watch this VIDEO to learn more about why camp is such a powerful experience for children.

Please feel free to contact us directly if you have any questions about this research and the impact that it has had on our camp program.  Thank you.
