Tom's Pantry

Tom's Pantry for the week of June 8th 2020.

Hello folks.

We are going to the market. As the COVID-19 situation improves, farmers markets are opening.

The Ottawa Markets of Parkdale and Byward are already operating but currently on a pre-order, pre-pay, pick up basis. I do not yet know when they will open to public browsing. I will attend the Parkdale market on Thursdays bi-weekly starting June 18th. But I need your order 48 hours in advance. That trip will also coincide with a delivery route including Embrun, Limoges, Ottawa, and back home through Metcalfe, Russell, Winchester, and Chesterville.

The farmers market in Vankleek Hill opens on Saturday June 20th in the parking lot of the Champlain Day Care Center. I will attend by-weekly starting on Saturday June 27th. I will accept orders in advance and offer products to browse and sell on site. That trip will also coincide with a home delivery route through that region from Casselman to Alexandria and Maxville.

The Eastern Ontario Agri-Food Network will launch its online platform around June 11th and Tom's Pantry will be there.

Baking and delivering this week!

I assembled a baking schedule on my website: http://www.tomspantry.ca/.

To summarize, I will bake this Wednesday June 10th for pick up at my home on Wednesday evening.

I plan a delivery route on Thursday south to Finch, Newington, Long Sault, Cornwall, then back through Apple Hill and Monkland.

I need your order please by Tuesday evening 9pm in order to prepare enough levain overnight. See the product descriptions and ordering considerations here. And then, view the price list and order online with Local Line

Next week Thursday the 18th, I will head to Ottawa and points along the way. The week after, on Saturday June 27th, I will head east to Vankleek Hill and points along the way there and back.

There is a minimum order of two loaves for a home delivery on a scheduled route.

And a reminder - I also offer organic flour and baking ingredients, also available in the virtual store.

Please order online instead of sending me emails, text messages, or Messenger messages. It makes life easier for you both you and me. Several customers ordered online with me last week and it works very well.

You have the option of paying me cash, by e-transfer, or with the payment tool in the online store.

Wow! That was a lot of work

Last week was probably my biggest week, about 55 loaves in one day. I started at 6am and finished around 9pm. Thank you Isabelle for the help with the tarts and for cleaning the dishes.

I must admit, there is not much money in bread making, about minimum wage. I need to make this process more time efficient to get more done in a reasonable day.

One decision is to work with batches of 6 loaves. I cannot be bouncing around with small orders given the wide variety in my product list. I loose too much time.

So I split the product list into 3 groups. The group of the most popular items are available every week. The two other groups of less popular items are available on a rotating monthly schedule.

Please see the schedule on the website - http://www.tomspantry.ca/. And you cannot go wrong. The online ordering system hides products that are not available in any given month.

This week's feature is sun-dried tomatoes.

I am not talking about the store bought tomatoes soaked in vinegar and oil.

These are certified organic, pure, vacuum packed, sun-dried tomatoes undamaged by preservatives.

Then add plenty of organic dehydrated oregano and organic olive oil blended into wheat or spelt sourdough bread.

This bread is a delight with a pasta meal, especially a spicy one, or a strew, or as a sandwich with prosciutto and an Italian goat cheese. And don't forget a dry red wine.

Order your organic sun-dried tomato sourdough bread for $12 each.

What are people saying?

Please keep sending you feedback. I need the good news and the bad news.
