"Now the body is not made up of one part but of many."

(1 Corinthians 12:14)

We live in a rather surreal time: on the brink of a return to normal, but with great uncertainty as to when that normality will return. Will it be 21st June, two weeks later or even later than that?

Alongside that, although most of us are longing for normality and the freedom from the many restrictions we have faced for more than a year or so, there is also an anxiety among many about what a return to normality will look like. Some will be happy to slot back into old ways and old roles, whilst for others the assumptions and realities of the past have changed, so that the future will look quite different. Maybe now is the time to step back from things or maybe it is time to try something new?

St. Luke's has always been blessed with a great team of enthusiastic and willing volunteers that has enabled it to be a welcoming and accessible church for all ages. We are a body of many parts (1 Corinthians 12:14) and a building of living stones (1 Peter 2:4-5).

As the lockdown restrictions ease over the summer we are going to be in a phase or rebuilding these living stones into a church fit for the 2020s. Some parts will look the same as before, others will look different.

There are exciting new developments, such as Claire our curate arriving, the new partnership with St. George's, a developing music group, new ideas for Sunday Club and a new weekly event in church called 'Cafe4All', which will start on Thursday mornings over the summer.

However, there are also gaps that need filling and teams of volunteers that need organising. This is a particular challenge when many are feeling uncertain and anxious about returning to church after such a long break from meeting in the building.

So, over the next couple of weeks I want to make myself available to talk to as many people as possible about how they might like to be involved in church life as we return to normal services in church. I have set up an online system, which you can use to book a 30 minute time slot to see me at some point from Monday 14th through to Saturday 26th June.

Please take advantage of this opportunity. It can either be you visiting me, me visiting you, a chat on the phone or even on Zoom. Click the button below to choose a day and time or if that is too confusing just give me a ring (01843 592562).

Contributions to this week's Opener

URGENT:

For this Sunday:  We need people responding to:

"Now the body is not made up of one part..."

with:

"...but of many."

Please send video contributions in as soon as possible (by 10am on Friday). You can send them by Whatsapp (07769 871520) or by WeTransfer.com to: [email protected].

The Switch to Livestreaming is Coming

The trialling of livestreaming our services is going well. We have managed to do it reasonably effectively for four weeks now and are working to iron out some of the minor glitches.

We were hoping that church could return to 'normal' on 27th June. It may be that that is delayed. However, at the PCC this week we decided that we will switch from pre-recorded to livestreaming on 27th June, whether the lockdown restrictions are extended or not.

So for the next two weeks the pre-recorded service will be available as it has been for the last sixteen months. Then from 27th June, a livestream of the service will be available to watch either at 11am on the Sunday or at anytime in the week after that. You access the livestream service in the same way as the pre-recoded service by clicking on a link, which I will send out and put on the church website. The main difference will be that you cannot do so until 11am.

Prayer Requests:

Be assured I will do my best to check that people are happy for the requests to be shared before including them. Please pray for...

  • For wisdom for the government in deciding whether to lift restrictions on 21st June or to extend them for longer.

  • St. Luke's as we put volunteers and people in place ready for a full return to 'normal' church on 27th June or later.

  • Flo Baldock - now on tablets to treat an ulcer in her stomach. Pray for healing.

  • Barb (Gloria's daughter's friend) who is going to have an operation on her Pancreas soon.

  • Katrina (Norah's daughter) has cancer in the lung, but the good news is it can be easily removed with just surgery. Give thanks that this is treatable and pray that the operation would be successful.

  • Rita who is not feeling well, because of a thyroid issue.

  • Jean Simmons. Please pray that she can be kept comfortable at this time. She is now in a nursing home.

  • Pauline Emptage waiting to hear from King's College Hospital about next steps for treating her back.

  • Nathan Court for his continuing treatment.

  • Alison's granddaughter, Lexi, waiting the results of a scan on her knee where she has a growth.

Please also continue to pray for: Jean Mayton, Jeannette (Claudia's sister), Shirley Crabb, Collette Judge and Joy Smithers.

PCC Briefing

The PCC on Monday was the first one since our Annual Meeting, so we appointed various officers, including Brenda Walters-Erlam to continue as PCC secretary and Nicky Galer to continue as PCC treasurer. We also appointed Brenda and Nicky to be part of a small group with Paul and two from St. George's PCC to agree a proposal on sharing financial resources between the two churches.

We heard short reports from the three reimagine and reignite teams on plans for our music, Sunday Club and the new Cafe4All initiative.

We agreed to start using iKnow an online administration system for use by churches. This system has many functions, including securely storing contact details, organising rotas and offering a simple phone application for the church. We will be moving our database of contacts over to this system in the coming weeks and you will probably receive an email with further details and asking you to check your contact details etc.

We also reviewed three quotes for putting solar panels on the church roof. A small group will look at these in more detail and suggest the best way forward.

St. George's Community Meal

This initiative offers good food and a chance to meet with others to those who would otherwise be struggling in St. George's Church Hall each Tuesday evening.

We are hoping to restart this on Tuesday 22nd June and a lot of work has gone in to making this possible. There is already a good team, including a few members of St. Luke's. If you are available on Tuesdays between 4:30pm and 7:30pm and interested in helping with this, then do get in contact.

Last Week's Talk:

Rebuild: Prayer is Foundational - Available Online

As Christians how do we respond to the challenges we face? When Nehemiah heard about the state of Jerusalem, he saw it as a challenge to deal with. His foundational response was to pray. In this talk we look at Nehemiah’s prayer and what we can learn about praying as we face challenges today.

St. Luke's Stories

Remember you can use this form to send in your personal reflections on your pandemic experience, which we can then publish. We also welcome mini-autobiographies and poems! Please just email them. In the meantime check out the poems and stories already there...

Jerusalem at the Centre of God's Plans?

Violence and discord have broken out once again in Israel/Palestine and Jerusalem. From the Old Testament, many would argue that the city continues to have a central role in God's purposes today. Yet the New Testament offers a radically new perspective on the city, pointing to Christ as the true temple in whom the promises of restoration were fulfilled. This 1996 Cambridge Paper shows that this has far‑reaching consequences for the church's mission and for political issues in Jerusalem today.
