November 21, 2018 Mindful News Happy Thanksgiving! From all of us at the South Florida Center for Mindfulness , we wish you, your family, and friends a Happy Thanksgiving! Our Fall of 2018 MBSR and MSC classes have come to a close, and we have been touched so deeply by our participants' individual journeys of self-exploration through their newfound abilities in mindful meditation and self-compassion practices. Congratulations to you all, and welcome to our Mindful Community! Here are some past and future moments to share! Recent moments Piero, with the assistance of Anuita, led our Fall 2018 all-day Silent Retreat at Boca Raton Physical Therapy. Thank you, participants, for allowing yourselves to drop out of "clock time", and drop into the present moment. Silent retreats are so important to our meditation practice! Last Friday was the Nursing Consortium of South Florida's conference on " Mindfulness; Creating the Space to Care " at the Signature Grand in Davie. What a lovely group of people! I presented on "Mindful Self-Compassion for Nurses", with the hope of giving these caregivers a couple of easy skills to support them during their stressful days. There, our MBSR graduate, Manika Petcharat, presented her dissertation, "The Effects of a Brief Culturally Tailored Mindfulness Intervention on Distress of Thai parents of Children with Disabilities". Dr. Petcharat will be returning to Thailand soon to teach nursing students. You will be missed, Manika! Upcoming Events 5-Day Teacher-Led Silent Retreat at the Duncan Center in Delray Beach 1/15 to 1/20/19 Early Bird Ends in 2 days! A silent retreat is like an immersion course. This retreat is modeled on the MBSR principles developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn at the Center for Mindfulness in the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) combines the skills of mindfulness and self-compassion, providing a powerful tool for emotional resilience. Mindfulness is the first step in emotional healing—being able to turn toward and acknowledge our difficult thoughts and feelings (such as inadequacy, sadness, anger, confusion) with a spirit of openness and curiosity. Self-compassion involves responding to these difficult thoughts and feelings with kindness, sympathy and understanding so that we soothe and comfort ourselves when we’re hurting. Research has shown that self-compassion greatly enhances emotional well-being.
