"Brunetti, with his crystalline design sense (think Chris Ware for kids) was the perfect choice to spearhead this project."

"Nadler makes this tale fresh, multiethnic, and accessible to younger children. His shrewdest update is the transformation of Princess Tilda from a prize-to-be-won supporting character into an adept and capable ruler who directly challenges her father's outdated belief that a woman is incapable of wielding power well."

"Nadler updates a lesser-known Grimm’s tale with diverse characters, compassion for animals, and a feminist hero. Nadler's crisp, neatly laid-out panel artwork is easy to follow, with moments of video-game-like adventure, and bites of magic food produce a hilariously trippy effect as pulsing rainbow halos appear around the eaters’ heads."  – Publishers Weekly

If you can't meet Ben in Toronto,
this Q&A is the next best thing:

Do you have any funny writing habits?

I don't know if any of my writing habits are anything unusual. I usually crack open a big shiny graphic novel that I'm jealous of to get myself pumped up to work. I also skip breakfast.

What were your favorite books growing up?

Picture

My earliest memories are of my parents reading me The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster and lots of Roald Dahl, specifically The BFG. Also, every single copy of The Berenstain Bears by Stan and Jan Berenstain.

What did your process look like for The White Snake
I wrote an initial draft in script form after reading over the original fairy tale a few times. From there, I did lots and lots of thumb nailing in tiny little panels with Françoise and Paul Karasik giving notes. It was more editing than I've ever done, taking a lot of time to get the pacing and tone just right. After all of the writing and editing was finished, I did the drawings on large sheets of bristol board with very light mechanical pencil, so it could still be edited easily. Then I inked right on top of the pencil with a small pen nib dipped in india ink. After erasing the pencil, I scanned all of the inked pages and colored them on photoshop with a Wacom tablet.

Have you put anything from your own life  into The White Snake?

Not consciously, I don't think. Except for my love of castles and kings, and general sense of humor. There are recurring characters that I tend to draw, like that troll with horns that keeps popping up, I've stuck him in other things.

Have you received any feedback?

People like that I've made the cast diverse, though I didn't intend for that to really be a focal point. I just thought in general it's good to have representation in media and especially in stories that children will read. But I'm glad that it strikes a chord!

Is there anyone you wish you could collaborate with?

Oh man, there are a million people. Ivan Brunetti and Chris Ware are my guys, I love them to death. I really enjoyed working with Françoise and Paul, I definitely hope I get a chance to work with them again at some point.

What are you working on right now?

I self publish an annual anthology called Sonder, I'm working on the third issue now. Aside from that, I have a longer sci-fi book I've been working on for ages that I'm trying to find a home for. I'm always chipping away at a million things, letting the project I'm most excited about or finds a publisher take priority.
