A clean house is a place where you can relax and feel at ease. It's a refuge from the outside world, a place where you can be yourself and feel comfortable. Nevertheless, before I get into this, I would like to add that messes are inevitable. You are not raising kids if you don't have chaos and noise. At times like that, you must find beauty in the madness.
You can do a few things to teach your kids to keep the house clean. First, set a good example. If you're always picking up after yourself and keeping things tidy, your kids will be more likely to do the same. Secondly, make cleaning fun. Create a game out of it or offer rewards for a job well done. Finally, be consistent.
I want to focus on the second point. I used my imagination to get through my chores when I was a kid. I pretended I was an army wiping out the enemy or a superhero clearing the streets of crime. It made the time go by much faster, and I enjoyed it. Interestingly, I used the same strategy to get through long road trips by imagining that I was riding on an eagle outside the car. I usually puked, but it did help the time go by faster.
So if you're struggling to get your kids to help out around the house, try making a game out of it. They'll have so much fun they won't even know they're doing work. And who knows, you might even have some fun yourself.
A few weeks ago, I made a scavenger hunt for outdoor cleanup. This week I wanted to do the same for indoor cleaning. Find my indoor cleanup scavenger hunt below!
