Nadja Spiegelman gives the inside scoop on where the idea for the book came from, how kids have responded to the book since it was first published in 2015, and what it was like to collaborate with Sergio García Sánchez, one of Europe's leading experimental cartoonists.

Speaking from rural Connecticut during confinement, miles away from her beloved city, Nadja shared some of her first memories of riding the trains as a kid growing up in New York City: “It was my key to freedom. It was the way that I could travel around on my own and go to playdates.”

This made its way into the book as the main character Pablo, a new arrival in the city, learns independence after losing his school group on an excursion to the Empire State Building. Those playdates Nadja mentioned are important too: Pablo learns that it’s okay to accept help and to make new friends, as he embarks on his impromptu adventure through the subway with Alicia.

Cartoonist Sergio García let us in on a little secret, too: the characters Pablo and Alicia are named after his own kids, who he's raising with his wife Lola Moral, the book’s colorist.

On its initial release in hardcover, the book received rave reviews for its storyline and graphics, with praise heaped on the emotionally astute relationship that builds between Pablo and Alicia. But don’t forget, LOST IN NYC is educational for an out-of-towner too! Publisher’s Weekly noted that it is “geographically useful.”

This is thanks to the detailed and imaginative artwork, combined with historical endnotes and photographs that become layered in the book like the subway itself. “One of the things I really love about comics,” said Nadja, “is their ability to plunge you into a world that can be imaginative and abstract and yet almost architectural in its precision.”
