A Note from Our Team

Portland Community College (PCC) Gerontology Professional Certificate

Because ongoing training and education is part of our mission, we want to share with you about an outstanding gerontology program for people who are interested in, or who are working in, older adult services. The PCC Gerontology Professional Certificate has much to offer, and we invite you to look further into the program.

Our team member, Matt Gannon currently instructs their online GRN 240: Care & Services Coordination course, and our other team member, Tracey Diani is scheduled to be a guest speaker in his course at the end of the fall term.

If you are interested in learning more about all of the different cool things happening in the gerontology department at PCC, be sure to follow the link above.

Tips for Successful Screening and Admissions the Next Time Around

  1. Schedule time for at least two face-to-face meetings to get an in-depth and authentic grasp of the individual's care needs, and to gather important information that was not discovered in the first meeting.

  2. Bring your business card and flier with you to leave with the prospective resident and their family.

  3. Have a packet with your house policies, Bill of Rights, and residency agreement and rate schedule available for review, as well as pictures of the house, bus route information, and a picture of their room.

The goal is for residents to find a compatible, home-like setting. Sometimes declining to admit someone is sometimes the best thing you can do for them if you know it is not a good fit into your care setting.

Happy Screening.

By Matt Gannon

“Movember” - November is Men’s Health Awareness Month

As a caregiver for 18 years, I have learned how there are certain parts of staying healthy I cannot afford to avoid as I age in my caregiving role. There is no doubt about it, self-care will determine the success of caregiver longevity.

Here are 5 caregiver health tips I’ve discovered:

  1. Get a full-night's sleep

  2. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and stay hydrated each day

  3. Exercise

  4. Meditate (focusing on what I can and cannot control)

  5. Create start times for my own meaningful activities each week
