December 2021
Core Virtues News

Picture

This month, as children peruse toy catalogs and compose their holiday wish lists, let's remind them to share their gifts with others. Most children are deeply empathetic, and our Core Virtues focus on charity, generosity and service resonates with them. Practicing these virtues empowers them to be a light in the darkness and see themselves as part of a community to which they can contribute.  So let's encourage children and ourselves to look beyond the pages of "Ready, Set, Play" to "Ready, Set, Serve."

We turn to Charles Dickensto highlight the December virtue of charity. Though he became famous and wealthy, Dickens experienced firsthand childhood poverty and the degrading nineteenth century workhouse. His classic, A Christmas Carol, with its message of attending to those in need, was written in 1843. But it has never gone out of print. We offer a number of versions, abridged and unabridged, as well as a wide variety of illustrations for this classic story.

Tidings of Comfort and Joy

Psychologists tell us that our own sense of purpose, meaning, and joy is heightened when we focus on the needs of others. This joyful Fifth Avenue bell ringer understands that very well!  From the Greater Good Science Center site, this quiz will help you get in the spirit. Tis the season for generosity. How important is it to you to help others? To find out—and get tips for becoming more altruistic—take this quiz, which is based on a scale developed by psychologist Gary S. Nickell of Moorhead State University. His work leads us to reflect on the ties that bind the human family.

You'll find wonderful Hanukkah and Christmas-related stories for your morning gathering here.  In our introduction, we include a special note about explaining the origin of these holidays to children, whether in public or private schools.  Separation of church and state does not require silence on historical origins of our major holidays. Among our new selections are Leslie Kimmelman's The Eight Knights of Hanukkah and Patricia Polacco's The Christmas Tapestry.
