Mindful News

Jon Kabat Zinn on NPR this week!

Jon Kabat-Zinn and me in 2012

This week, JKZ was a guest on NPR's On Point with Budd Mishkin.  The Title was "Meditation in the Mainstream: the Growing Mindfulness Movement".  It is always great to hear Jon speak, but it was also very interesting to hear Thomas Joiner, psychologist at FSU, speak about how mindfulness could lead to narcissism!  Dr. Joiner did acknowledge not being trained in mindfulness.  I recommend you all listen to it!

My experience at the Jon Kabat-Zinn Retreat at Omega this summer

As MBSR instructors, it is recommended that we attend a silent retreat once a year.  Although JKZ's retreat wasn't "silent", I thought that being with the creator of MBSR would "count" for this year.  What a wonderful experience!  Firstly, I was able to be with my colleague, Valerie York-Zimmerman (who taught me MBSR back in 2011) and her MBSR practicum students from Miami.  We all represented South Florida!

But the best part of this retreat was how Jon provided fellowships to people of color, providing us the opportunity to dialogue with diverse groups of people about, among other things, racial inequality in this country.  I learned that it is much easier to have these challenging conversations after meditating!  I gained many insights that week, and I hope that our upcoming classes become more diversified, so we can continue these important conversations.

We can become more aware of our implicit biases, those "lenses" we wear over our perception, through mindfulness practices.

New 8-week class in

Mindful

Self-Compassion

Mindful Self-Compassion is an 8-Week holistic wellness program that combines the skills of mindfulness and self-compassion to enhance emotional resilience. Participants learn to turn toward and acknowledge difficult thoughts and feelings (such as inadequacy, sadness, anger, confusion) with mindfulness and respond with kindness rather than self-criticism. Research has shown that self-compassion enhances emotional wellbeing.

This course is based on the groundbreaking research of Kristin Neff and the clinical expertise of Christopher Germer. MSC teaches core principles and practices that enable participants to open to the present moment, feel connected to self and others and respond with compassion.

Participants benefit by exploring the latest research in self-compassion and mindfulness, by discovering how these practices can be integrated under the umbrella of self-compassion training, and by learning skills that they can practice themselves for personal wellbeing.  There are now over 1200 articles in peer-reviewed journals that show the efficacy of these practices in mental health.

I am currently a Teacher in Training through the Center for Mindful Self-Compassion.  I will provide a free orientation session on Wednesday evening, September 12, from 6:00 to 8:30 at Boca Raton Physical Therapy.  Classes begin two weeks later.  A great program for MBSR graduates who want to deepen their practice, as well as for novices to mindfulness!  Also, up to 27.5 continuing education credits for nurses, psychologists, LMFTs, LCSWs, and LMHCs through International Seminars Group (ISG).

The University of Miami’s Mindfulness Research and Practice Initiative (UMindfulness) is hosting Kristin Neff and Chris Germer in their rare South Florida appearance!

Research demonstrates that self-compassion is significantly linked to increased happiness, vitality, motivation and optimism and decreased anxiety, depression and stress. Even more promising, self-compassion has been demonstrated to be a mutable trait–cultivated through the practice of guided meditations and daily informal exercises and meditations. Participants of this two-day workshop will learn the core skills of the 8-week Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) training, an empirically-supported program designed to cultivate self-compassion using meditation, daily life practices, lecture, group exercises and discussion. Self-compassion is an emotional skill that can be learned by anyone. You will be provided with essential tools for treating yourself in a kind, compassionate way whenever you suffer, fail, or feel inadequate. These practices can be instrumental to mental health practitioners both for their own self-care as well as helping clients. This workshop is relevant for the general public as well as practicing mental health professionals

International Seminars Group (ISG) will also be providing 12 Continuing Education credits for nurses, LMFTs, LCSWs, LMHCs and psychologists.  Please take advantage of this rare opportunity to meet with the creators of the 8-week program in Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC)!
