Referral agencies or senior housing advisors can be helpful in many ways to adult care home providers. They are one option to help you find the right residents for your care home, including residents who pay privately

Because senior housing advisors receive multiple calls each month from individuals and families seeking help, they are able to bring valuable referrals to care home providers.

Winter Safety

Last week, the Pacific NW experienced warm temperatures and plenty of sunshine. I call this time of year "first false spring."

This week, we are supposed to have cold weather again, with temperatures falling into the teens by mid-week with a chance of snow on the valley floor.

This is just a reminder that we are still in the middle of winter for another month. It is also a reminder to think about winter safety and how you can keep yourself, and all who depend on you, safe from the cold temperatures.

Here are a few quick tips to stay safe during the last weeks of winter:

  • Watch the news, listen to the radio or sign up for winter storm warnings. This will help you to know what kind of weather is on the way.
  • Make a plan and be prepared when you are traveling, even if it is a short distance. Winter weather can bring storms that can disrupt traffic. If you do get stuck in traffic, stay in your vehicle.
  • Be prepared for power outages. Freezing rain can cause trees to damage power lines and cause electrical disruptions. Make sure your emergency supplies are ready, if needed, and review your emergency preparedness plan.
  • Only use a generator or grill outdoors. Don't use open flames or a gas stove to heat your home. These are sources of carbon monoxide that can harm or even kill. Know where warming stations are located in your area if you lose heat inside your home.

While the cold weather is almost over, it is always good to be prepared in case of an emergency. Being prepared is the key to success during storms and emergencies. It can be a stressful time, but being prepared is the most important thing you can do for your home, yourself, your family, and the residents in your care home.

"Be hopeful. Be optimistic. Never lose that sense of hope.
