Blue Heron Herald for 11.8.17

A note from Mark Wagner, Head of School

Parent Conferences

With parent conferences scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, November 20th and 21st, I thought I would take a moment to share a few lines about this important enterprise.

First, a few mechanics.  You will receive from your child’s teacher an email with instructions about how to sign up for conferences (we use online sign-up calendars).  Conferences for children in Prekindergarten and Lower School are held with homeroom teachers.  Conferences for Middle School children include the four homeroom teachers for the 5th/6th team, and the 7th/8th team.  If you would like to meet with any of your child’s special area teachers, you are invited to contact them directly via email to request an appointment.  Conferences run from 8:00 am until 4:00 pm each day.  Accommodating all families can make for a full schedule and we appreciate your help as we endeavor to keep things moving along.

The purpose of fall conferences is to give us the opportunity to share with you our insights into the educational journey that your child is walking here at Saint Andrew’s.  While report cards provide important information about a student’s educational progress, we know that a letter grade doesn’t always tell the whole story.  Work habits such as organization, time management, and persistence are important and worthy of discussion. Understanding a child’s progress over time in relation to academic standards, and in relation to his or her past performance, also provides meaningful context to any set of grades.  Equally important is a child’s social development.  Learning is a highly interactive endeavor, and productive relationships with peers and adults are essential for success in school.  Conferences give us time to explore this important element of your child’s experience with us.  Finally, at conferences we can share with you the genuine pleasure we take in working with the delightful young people in our charge.

We are looking forward to speaking with you and hope that you find conferences helpful and informative.

Thank you to everyone who made the Spirit Week bonfire such a success!  Everyone enjoyed the delicious S'Mores and hot cocoa around the campsite.

A special thank you to Mr. Jon Vars to making sure we had wood, sticks and other supplies for the event.

Please Share your Family's History for Veteran's Day

The Third Grade team, Mrs. Becky Fuerst and Ms. Olivia Marzano asked their students to bring in photos of their family veterans. They would like to extend the opportunity to the rest of the school community to share  family history.  Please write the name of the family member (current or retired) their rank, branch and position or job on an index card.

The cards will be displayed on the bulletin board in the Elementary School Building.  Please submit the information and any photos by tomorrow, if possible.  Thank you.

1. Lower School pick up will be held from noon until 12:20 pm, and MIddle School pick up will follow from 12:20 until 12:40 pm.  Please follow the same afternoon carline procedures as on a regular school day.

2. Pizza lunches will not be provided on Friday, November 10th.  Students wishing to have lunch before being dismissed for the day will need to bring a lunch from home.

3. Typically, students are granted an out-of-uniform day when we hold an early dismissal.  However, this Friday we are hosting an Open House for prospective families.  Because of that, we are asking that all students attend school in regular school attire on Friday (including in PE attire, if that is what their schedule dictates).

Finally, on Friday morning at 8:30 all of the students and staff will be gathering around the flagpole for a brief ceremony to recognize the Veteran’s Day holiday.  You are welcome to join us if your schedule allows.

Ms. Shannon Kyle, 7/8 Math.

"I took three 3-credit classes through Anne Arundel County Community College. These courses were EDU 214 (Intro to Special Education), EDU 215 (Principles of Instructional Assessment), and EDU 243 (Methods of Effective Reading Instruction). All these are classes are part of my Maryland certification efforts/ program. I plan to apply all of the knowledge gained to the 7th and 8th grade math lessons and during my homeroom experiences and lessons. "

Mrs. Elaine Greene, Assistant Head of School

"Building Partnerships: Best Practices in Community Outreach & Service Learning"

"The program was about building comprehensive service learning programs that support the mission of our schools.  We explored  strategies to enhance the quality of community outreach in our school, and identifying community partnerships that will benefit our students.  Presentations were given by non-profit directors, service learning coordinators, and community leaders. The service learning committee will use the information gathered from other committees to develop and implement a service learning community at Saint Andrews."

Ms. Mary Philip, PreK 4's

"Teaching from the Inside Out"

"It was a week-long, 3-credit course for early childhood educators. We learned about ways to use observation in the classroom to form and inform our teaching and lesson planning.I am making sure that I use the wonderful tool of observation to get to know each of my students better: not only to know their academic strengths and needs, but also to better understand what topics inspire them, and what their interests are. Then I can plan activities and set up learning centers to engage a specific child or a small group of children based on my observations. Using the children's interests as a springboard to classroom planning and activities makes learning relevant and exciting for my young students."

Picture Retakes will take place on Wednesday, November 15.  Class Pictures will take place on Thursday, November 16.
