December 15, 2017 Mindful News Happy Holidays, ! During this hectic, happy, stressful time of year, I am so grateful to have a daily meditation practice, and you, our mindful South Florida community! You help me stay grounded when feeling stressed. You help me stay calm when feeling overwhelmed about the myriad of things to do on my "to-do" list. Thank you! Congratulations to Gus Castellanos, Mary Beth Stern, and Janet Slom for becoming certified to teach Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) by the Oasis Institute at the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Healthcare, and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Certification is limited to those with extensive professional experience, previous training and experience in teaching MBSR, and a solid meditation practice. There are now 5 UMASS-certified MBSR instructors in South Florida...YAY! Mindful Eating Mindful Eating Meditation With all the holiday distractions this time of year, and the easy accessibility of holiday treats, it is so easy to mindlessly pop a chocolate, or a cookie in your mouth. Here is a mindful eating meditation if you would like to practice mindfully eating your favorite treat! For those who would like more mindful eating support throughout the holidays, Eat Right Now is a 28-day app-based program that could really help. It was created by Judson Brewer , the interim director at the Center for Mindfulness at UMASS . I am accepting sign-ups for my live group classes that support those participating in this program, beginning the end of January. And, in a culture that idolizes the perfect body, self-criticism and self-judgment prevail. Diets that focus on weight loss have not been shown to be effective in the long term and may even contribute to weight gain and greater despair. Taking a more holistic approach, mindful eating can help people end overeating and make friends with their bodies, use awareness to manage their emotions, and guide their behavior.
