A Supportive Community for Moms of Children with disabilities and other unique needs

 Dear Moms of WABT,

We made it! We made it to 2022. For me, a new year brings HOPE and POSSIBILITY. This year I do feel the same. And… it is also a teeny bit laden with internal pleas of no more Covid risks, no more distance learning, no more shutdowns, please no more. We can’t go BACK. I have decided to practice what I preach and stay in the moment. Stay in the day. Practice gratitude for the small things, the every day goodness moments, the loving people I live with or do life with.

One night over the holiday break, I surprised Ryan that we were going out to dinner. And, that we were going with dear friends who love him and who he loves. He jumped up and down and flapped his hands and hugged me. These precious moments we hold onto and relish in. Soak in the sweetness. I vow to do this this year. Will you vow to do this, too?

I do love January’s POSSIBILITY in all caps. Maybe you do, too. Maybe you don’t. Maybe you are somewhere in-between. And that is ok. Wherever you are on the spectrum of January philosophies and pep talks, we see you. We are here. For all of it. What I do know is that the SISTERHOOD & SUPPORT of We Are Brave Together is a constant. Steadfast. Faithful. Never-ending.

We are so excited about all that we will be offering to you this year. May your year be full of hand-flapping pure joy.

With love & sisterhood,

Jessica Patay

WHAT EFFIE WOULD SAY TO A MOM GRAPPLING WITH A NEW DIAGNOSIS: FIND YOUR PEOPLE and take the time to feel what you're going through. This road is hard and beautiful. It will take more strength than you knew you had in you. Be kind to yourself, ask for help and accept any that comes your way. Resource Groups

This year we are so excited to offer you “resource groups.” We want to still offer you educational opportunities but we are no longer doing the monthly educational workshop.

We have different speakers and topics lined up for you! For example:

  • Financial Planning
  • Collaborative Communication at the IEP table
  • Sex For All Abilities/Sex Ed
  • Behavior Management
  • DBT Skills for Parents

Each group will meet four times with the exception of the DBT skills course which is a six week course that we will offer twice in 2022. We are waiting on dates, times, and zoom codes from our speakers. For now you’ll find it under workshops on the website. Once we get a new website you’ll find it under resource groups.

Join us for this life-changing, practical course on managing distress, mindfulness, and effective communication skills!

Unlike any other courses you have taken. DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) is a form of Cognitive Behavior Therapy that is evidenced based and is truly effective for gaining critical tools for managing anxiety, the way you communicate with your kids, your spouse and others.

Parenting Tip

When Things Get Chaotic, Slow Down.

When things get chaotic in parenting, pressing pause and slowing down can help you see what is actually going on and take action from a calmer place of clarity and intention. The tendency can be to act/talk/move quickly or get big with your energy because you want the discomfort of the chaos to end. It might feel productive and like you are doing something to stop it, however, in my experience, this only adds fuel to the chaos fire.

The most effective and efficient use of energy during times like these is to slow down, almost as though moving in slow motion. Why? Because this utilizes the thinking mind to observe the present moment from a different perspective and helps bring clarity around what is actually going on, as opposed to what you might think is going on. There is often a big difference!!
