What's New in September

Truly Amazing

In July, I had the privilege of attending the 52nd Delta Zeta National Convention in Orlando, Florida as the delegate for our San Antonio Alumnae chapter. The week was Truly Amazing and I feel very blessed to have been able to represent this wonderful chapter.

The week began with a welcome dinner and an inspiring Keynote address from Dr. Lori Hart (@drlorihart). It was also announced that Delta Zeta launched a new website and member app earlier that day. If you haven’t had the chance to check out the new site, I suggest taking a look, it’s Truly awesome!

In addition to our business meeting and educational sessions, Thursday was our day to celebrate Philanthropy. At the Celebrate Service dinner, we awarded The Painted Turtle, our National Service Project, $300,000, and we awarded The Starkey Hearing Foundation, our National Philanthropy, $1,200,000! Our collegians and alumnae are nothing short of amazing and it’s Truly rewarding to be able to witness this first hand. After the dinner, we were surprised with a concert from American Idol’s Jessica Sanchez. She was fantastic and got us all pumped up our Hike for Hearing. After a nice hike, we had a party by the pool complete with dancing and a turtle race!

Friday began with a Memorial Service honoring all Delta Zeta’s whom have passed away during this last biennium. It was a very beautiful and touching service. The business meeting was then followed by the Leadership Achievement Luncheon. This luncheon recognizes collegians and alumnae who will be receiving coveted Delta Zeta awards. During this luncheon, our chapter was awarded the Alumnae Chapter Excellence Award. This award is given to the top alumnae chapters in the country. This is the second Convention in a row in which we have won a National Award. This day was also special because we welcomed a new sister into Delta Zeta. Tani Austin, Co-founder of the Starkey Hearing Foundation, was our Convention initiate.

On the final day of Convention, we closed with a celebration Banquet and a reception honoring the newly elected National Council.

The week was Truly Amazing! Delta Zeta continues to prove why we are the premier women’s organization. I am Truly Proud!

What are you currently doing as a career professional? I am a registered dietitian working for CommuniCare Health Center’s WIC clinic. I love being a part of the movement for preventative medicine.

What has been one of your best memories as an alumna? My favorite event as an alumnae chapter member has been biking at Blue Star and having best gelato you’ve ever had in San Antonio as a treat after.

What are some things you like to do in your free time? During my free time, I like to cook. I always enjoy trying new healthy recipes. The latest thing I have made is a pumpkin spice granola for the start of fall. I also like to garden. It allows me to be able to pick fresh herbs, fruits, and veggies from the garden to use in my cooking.

What are you currently doing as a career professional? I'm an attorney for the Social Security Administration, Office of Disability Adjudication and Review (SSA ODAR for short).

What has been one of your best memories as an alumna? My best memory as an alumna was going to Dallas for the NME Specialist training! For three days, I got to hang out with sisters from all across the nation, and work together so that Delta Zeta's NME program stays fresh, innovative, and exciting. Meeting all of those women and swapping stories about our chapter experiences was so much fun.

What are some things you like to do in your free time? In my free time I enjoy hanging out with my husband, working on the designs for our house renovation, hanging out with family and friends, playing with my dog, knitting, reading, painting, traveling, making trips to A&M (my husband's alma mater) to watch football, visiting Fredericksburg, and exploring San Antonio.
