PARTNERSHIP FOR A TOBACCO

FREE WISCONSIN

Our statewide commercial tobacco prevention coalition.

Thank you, tobacco prevention advocates!

Reflecting on 2021, our movement accomplished a great deal despite the COVID-19 pandemic. On behalf of Dr. Todd Mahr, Coalition Chair, and the Steering Committee, I extend our gratitude to the many coalition members who stepped into leadership this year.

VIRTUAL COALITION MEETINGS

We met virtually three times this Spring. Our meetings focused on:

  1. Action steps to address Wisconsin’s youth vaping epidemic and tobacco-related disparities (April 14, 2021);
  2. Health equity in the tobacco prevention and control movement (April 29, 2021); and
  3. Moving past the pandemic and returning to in-person care: seizing opportunities to address tobacco addiction (May 19, 2021).

Three separate work groups planned these meetings, and in total, 300+ coalition members registered to attend. Click on the flyer files to learn more about the meeting topics and presenters.

Policy Victories

Throughout 2021, coalition partners advocated for tobacco control policies.

  1. The 2021-22 State Budget maintained level funding for the Tobacco Prevention and Control Program.
  2. A tobacco 21 bill passed out of committees in both houses of the State Legislature. It has not yet been scheduled for a final vote.
  3. The Department of Health Services published revised standards for substance use prevention, intervention, and treatment services. Among several other changes, the revisions to DHS Chapter 75 include that services need written documentation outlining:
  • Their approach to assessment and treatment for concurrent tobacco use disorders
  • A policy regarding a smoke-free environment.

THANK YOU to everyone who educated state leaders to achieve these policy victories. Due to your actions, we will continue to reduce the burden of commercial tobacco across Wisconsin.

As we move into 2022, please think about who you can invite to join the coalition to continue to reduce the burden of commercial tobacco across Wisconsin. We will have more opportunities to step into leadership as we plan our Spring meetings, coming soon!

Sincerely,

Darcie K.G.Warren, MPA
