SEASONAL NEWSLETTER

Autumn 2018

“When emptiness is still,

that is eternity. When it moves,

that is love”  -Adyashanti

Hi friends,

Another season has come and gone and here we are swiftly moving into the fall and descent into the cooler, darker months. If you're like me, there's always that moment of hesitation before leaving summer behind and settling into these last few months of the year.

This past summer was transformative and alive with new corporate wellness classes, cooking events, and a fun vacation backpacking the West Coast Trail on Vancouver Island. There's no better place to recharge than in nature, right?!

This fall I'll be continuing with my regular offerings and will be adding in some specials around private yoga and yoga nidra sessions. See links along with the seasonal recipe below!

Lastly, I'll be cooking for another one of Jennifer Maraccini's amazing Weekend Yoga Retreats in Ojai, California, November 2nd-4th. Check it out if you're looking for a nourishing and uplifting weekend away. There are still on-site accommodations available.

Wishing you all well as we collectively move through so much at this time. Here's to letting go with love and recognizing the beauty around us, through it all.

Ayurvedic Health Consultations

Ready for Fall?

Ayurveda teaches us to live in harmony with nature and adjust our diet and lifestyle practices throughout the cycles and rhythms of the year.

Fall is a time of letting go and properly releasing excess fire (pitta) that has accumulated throughout the summer. It is also considered 'vata season' where the air and ether element increase and cold and dry qualities become present in our outer and inner environment. We want to make sure to pacify the vata dosha with grounding, warming, and moist foods, among other things to support this seasonal transition.

Depending on your unique constitution, specific daily routines, herbs, and rituals will be more balancing than others. As we become aware of our constitutional tendencies we can better tend the ever-changing needs of our body, mind, and spirit. Ayurveda is the science of Self-Healing, so it's about empowering yourself to follow your inner wisdom and gain the knowledge and tools necessary to live in good health!

AYURVEDIC RECIPE

Butternut Kitchari

This kitchari recipe is nice and grounding for this transition into fall. The warming spices make it easy to digest and the healing combination of mung beans and rice resets the mind-body-spirit. *This image, all ingredients, and instruction come directly from Kate O'Donnell's beautiful, new, Everyday Ayurveda Cookbook. I recommend getting your own copy to really dive in!

Ingredients

1 small butternut squash
Coconut oil
¾ cup split mung beans, soaked overnight or at least a few hours
¾ cup basmati rice
4 cups water
1 can full-fat coconut milk
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp ground ginger
1/2 tsp ground cardamom
1 tsp turmeric
2-inch piece fresh ginger, peeled and finely diced
1 tsp salt
¼ cup coconut, large flakes, for garnish

Instruction

"To roast the squash: Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Cut the squash in half, scoop out the seeds, rub a few drops of coconut oil onto the cut faces, and place face-up on a baking sheet. Roast until tender, about 1 hour. Remove from the oven.

In a large saucepan, bring 3 cups of the water and the coconut milk to a boil on high heat. Set the other cup of water aside to add during cooking as needed.

Rinse the mung beans and rice well. Add the rice, beans, spice mix, turmeric, and ginger to the boiling water. Keep on high heat until the liquid boils again. Turn the heat down to low. Scoop the squash out of the skin with a large spoon and add, in chunks, to the pot. The chunks will break down as it cooks. Simmer, partially covered, for 40 minutes or more, adding the reserved 1 cup water as needed. It’s finished when the rice and mung beans are soft; the liquid is loose and soupy; and the butternut squash chunks have fallen apart. Turn off the heat, and stir in the salt. Let stand, covered, for 5 minutes.

In a frying pan, toast the coconut flakes on medium heat, stirring until they begin to brown. Remove from the heat immediately. Spoon the kichari into individual bowls, and garnish each bowl with 1 Tbsp coconut flakes."
