Tip of the Week - Emergency Preparedness Plan

Picture

We're going to continue our discussion on emergency preparedness. To see our prior tips, see our 8/1/23 newsletter where we where we discussed emergency supplies and our 8/8/23 newsletter where we talked about earthquake preparedness.

Sure, all care homes are required to have an emergency preparedness plan, but with this plan, it's important to not become complacent. This is an active plan that both the provider and staff need to understand in detail.

Let's talk about your emergency preparedness plan. Consider the following below to plan ahead and be prepared:

  • Review of Plan: Have you carefully and fully reviewed your emergency preparedness plan? Are you familiar with what you and your staff need to do in the event of a power outage, earthquake, flood, etc.? Have you reviewed your plan annually as required, or as conditions change?
  • Resident Emergency Preparation: Do you have resident emergency information available with your emergency preparedness plan? Do residents know what to do in the event of an emergency and how to evacuate?
  • Staff Training: Have you trained your staff on the details of your plan, and do they clearly understand their role and responsibilities in the event of an emergency? Are you doing this as part of the caregiver orientation to the home?
  • Review and Practice of Plan: Have you practiced your plan? This is required by Multnomah County only, but we highly recommend conducting what is called "tabletop exercises." This is a discussion with staff of a specific emergency scenario, your emergency plan, and what each person's role is in the event of an emergency. You and your staff walk through scenarios and how to respond. See this video for a basic overview of tabletop exercises

The key is to be prepared in advance. Provide you, your staff, and the residents with peace of mind in knowing you are prepared in the event of an emergency
