PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Picture
Elizabeth Flanagan

Where were you when the eclipse happened this week? I joined hundreds of others at
the Marketplace in Goleta to observe. Thank you to the Santa Barbara Museum of
Natural History which sponsored the local gathering and provided special sunglasses
to protect our eyes. It was a thrill to be part of an amazing event witnessed by
multitudes around the globe.
With fifty-two potential pieces to choose from at our April ingathering, our juror, Libby Smith selected forty-one as well as admitting three of our five prospective members. I extend a warm welcome to the new members: Elizabeth Imperato, Sterling Keeley, and Ann Purdy. Congratulations to our Juror's Choice award winners: Lynn Altschul, Aldon Bregante, Piri Friedman, Janice Lorber, Francine McOwen and Iolani Pu'u. Photos of their pieces follow further on in the Newsletter.

Also further on in the newsletter is a write up by GVAA Artists, Tia Blickley and Jane Sevier on their experience in delivering an art lesson at one of the four Goleta Union School District (GUSD) schools in the Art After School Program (ASAP). Included are photos of some of the beautiful art produced by the kids. This is the second of four GUSD schools to have had a successful art lesson provided by GVAA Artist Mentors. The art supplies for ASAP were purchased by GVAA volunteer Karen Schroeder using money from the Florence Russell Legacy Fund. This fund was established through the sale of some of the original watercolor paintings bequeathed to GVAA by Florence. Additional donations can be made by sending a check to GVAA, P.O. Box 435, Goleta, CA 93116. Please indicate that the donation is for the Florence Russell Legacy Fund.

Pat Heller, GVAA' s Special Events Coordinator is busy developing our Marketplace Show and Sale, scheduled for June 15 th from 10-4 pm. The Guidelines and Application will be sent out to GVAA members mid April. This popular event allows GVAA artists to sell their original art as well as prints and other related products to the public.

Our featured artist for May is Mirella Z. Olson. Mirella, who is from Verona, Italy, has been a member of GVAA for many years. She has exhibited her beautiful landscape oil paintings with GVAA in various venues over the years, including the Goleta Valley Library (GVL) and Stow House. Mirella's art has also enhanced some of GVAA's ads.

As always, please keep well and stay safe – Elizabeth

I was born in Verona, Italy and was juried into the Società delle Belle Arti, which was very special for me. I had a one-woman show in Verona and participated in group shows in San Giovanni Lupatoto and Cerea, Italy. I was also juried into the Christmas Nativity Show in Verona's Roman amphitheater.

I came to California in 1964 and joined the Los Padres Watercolor Society in 1992, then the GVAA, and Santa Barbara Art Association soon after.  In 1995 I joined the Cabrillo Boulevard Sunday Art Show and participated for 20 years until the construction of the new bridge closed the show.. At that time, I decided not to return to Italy and joined the Artist Guild of Santa Ynez and was a member of the Gallery Los Olivos from 2000 until the pandemic in 2020.I have participated in paint-outs and group shows.  featuring artists on the Library West Wall, Stow House Festivals, and the Camino Real Marketplace (when they first started).

We have taught two lessons to primary elementary school children using watercolors, pasteles and other art materials purchased with the gift from Florence Russell. The kids were very engaged and loved the lessons. We introduced many art and math terms. All the lessons and materials were provided and easy to follow.
