All About Nature

Nature Connection, Hope, and Action

Growing Up Boulder is working with numerous partners to operationalize the concepts that GUB Co-Founder, Professor Emerita Louise Chawla, articulated in her article about nature connection, hope, and action. In collaboration with the City of Boulder’s Open Space and Mountain Parks Department (OSMP), Classrooms for Climate Action, and Boulder Valley School Districts’s Columbine Elementary, GUB is building upon the successful integration of curriculum, outdoor learning and youth leadership & action (service learning + stewardship activities) learned from the 2021 GUB-OSMP Wood Brothers Project.  Students will then have the opportunity to share their recommendations, either via the Right Here Right Now Global Climate Summit at CU on December 1-4, 2022 or by connecting in alternate ways with decision-makers.

Growing Up Boulder is partnering with the City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks, Boulder Valley School District, and others to explore and enhance how connections with nature can help children and youth heal in the wake of Boulder wildfires. Building on recent research about nature, hope and climate action (see above), partners are engaging young people in developing recommendations for educational media and programming, service-learning opportunities, and small sustainable interpretive infrastructure in the Marshall Mesa and NCAR area.

GUB Senior Project Manager, Deryn Wagner and City of Boulder colleagues, presented at the Colorado Open Space Alliance on September 19 about this Eco-Healing project.

I am from Venezuela, where I studied sociology, since I wanted to make a positive impact in the community. I have worked with many different populations to help build their skills for themselves, their families and their communities. Since 2018, I have been involved in many projects with El Centro AMISTAD, where we seek to increase equity and inclusiveness for the Latinx Community in Boulder. This mission will be complemented by my work at Growing Up Boulder, where I will support bilingual, bicultural projects for children, youth and families in a playful and enjoyable way.
