In Case You Missed It:

What are Your Guiding Values?

By Alyssa Elting McGuire, Founder

This is the first installment in a series we'll be bringing to you on ethics in business.

The past few years have brought profound change. In 2020, we found ourselves in the midst of a global pandemic that impacted every aspect of life. Businesses closed, and there were restrictions on care homes. In fact, I didn't step foot in a care home for 15 months during that time. Despite these challenges, we adapted, pivoted, and continued to grow as a business. It's incredible to think about how much things have changed over the past four years.

Yet, through all of this change, one thing has remained constant for us: our core values.

When I founded this business in 2018, I set forth a mission, vision, and core values that continue to guide us today. These values are:

  • Integrity
  • Professionalism
  • Equity
  • Respect
  • Passion for Purpose
  • Ethical Leadership

Recently, a social media memory took me back to a milestone from four years ago—in 2020, our business was honored to receive the Better Business Bureau® Torch Award for Ethics Spark Award for Oregon. The BBB has a long-standing history of upholding ethics in business around the country. The Spark Award award recognizes new businesses that demonstrate high ethical standards and build trust within their communities.

As we continue to grow, we remain unwavering in our commitment to uphold the highest ethical standards. This is a non-negotiable principle—one we will never compromise, whether for financial gain or recognition. We know we’re not perfect, and I know I've made my fair share of mistakes along the way. But at the same time, our commitment to ethical business practices remains firm. Integrity, trust, and credibility, once lost, are incredibly difficult to regain. We will always strive to return to our foundational values, no matter the circumstances.

I encourage you to take a moment to reflect on your own guiding values. What principles guide your actions, both in business and in life? How do those values shape the way you run your business? How do your actions build trust in your relationships?

Opportunities may come and go, but our values at Oregon Care Home Consulting & Training remain firm. Integrity, passion, and a commitment to supporting care home providers while driving positive change will always be at the core of what we do. These values will continue to be the constant in our business even as we continue to experience the change around us.
