Are you ready to let your Summer Walking Go Wild?

Are the longer days pulling on you? May is the perfect time to take up a new walking habit or get serious about your current waffling walking routine. Take advantage of the body’s seasonal upsurge in energy and add walks and hikes to your life. In this case energy begets energy: your energy will increase from regular walking. By the time fall comes around and a seasonal slump might sway you to sit at home, the new habit will be firmly entrenched. Follow these steps:

Read Walking Gone Wild, if you need motivation. Recently released, it’s an easy, entertaining read that is guaranteed to get you moving. Or so readers say. You can buy it here: https://www.transformation-travel.com/store.html or at major booksellers.

Get some new walking shoes, Did you know that those perfectly good looking shoes in your closet are probably not the ones you want? Check the sides of those spongy soles. If you see tiny cracks slashing across the sides of the soles, the soles have broken down. In this case pain doesn’t get you gain: get some shoe-wear that makes you feel you’re floating. Remember, aging feet lengthen and you may need a bigger size.

Get out your calendar, If you don’t commit your intent to your calendar, chances are other “important” events will get in the way. Decide if you want a 2 mile daily habit (walk your dog), a 5 mile exercise routine several times a week with friends, or a once-a-week get out of town hike (You can take up the 52 hikes in 52 weeks challenge). Find the day and time of day that works and block it out! This is a commitment to your health, your energy, your independence, your future. It’s as important as the visits you plan with family, children and grandchildren! Who wants a visitor who can’t get around very well? You owe it to you and your family to keep moving.

Maps, and GPS Devices:

Are you a hiker? Carry a map and a device (a phone only works if there is reception) that will allow contact with the folks at home in case you get delayed, or (God forbid) get lost or hurt your self.

Maps: The little hand-drawn map in your guide book won’t do in case you need to find your way out of the woods. Carry a topographically correct map or a GPS device that will have the map of where you’re hiking downloaded. Gaia app costs $9.99 for a year’s subscription and will let you download maps around the globe.  The GPS function lets you locate yourself on the map and find your way back to the nearest trail if you took a wrong turn. All Trails app is free until you want to download maps of trails in the US, then it’s a monthly fee of $2.50 or $99.99 a year. The long trails such as the PCT, and AT have their own free apps and maps.

Personal Locator Beacon: A PLB is not a GPS mapping device, even though many have a tracking function. A PLB is a device that uses GPS to communicate your coordinates to folks at home or to a rescue crew. It is one of the 10 essentials that need to go in your backpack when you hike out of cell tower range. The ARC PLB device is the absolute sure-fire way of being found. It is used by the military and uses a sophisticated location connector. You cannot communicate with your rescuers or folks at home with an ARC device. SPOT and Garmin-Inreach are the 2 most popular PLB devices. SPOT just came out with a new model that allows two way communication via text as Garmin-Inreach does. Both have SOS functions and ways to send a message to folks at home in case there isn’t an emergency. Walking Gone Wild has more details about these devices or read https://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/personal-locator-beacons.html
