Heartland Cancer Foundation has been assisting cancer patients who live in Southeast Nebraska and Northeastern Kansas since 2006 by providing gasoline and prescription cancer mediations. Our goal to do more to assist people in practical ways was met this August with a grant expansion.

Cancer Classic Golf Tournament | |
The 5th Annual Cancer Classic golf tournament was held on Sept. 21, 2017, at Hillcrest Country Club. 120 golfers enjoyed the golf scramble, the weather, the food and the beautiful course. A lunch of brats and hamburgers was served prior to tee off and a delicious Italian buffet was enjoyed after the event. A live auction was held for items such as a golf outing to Arbor Links in Nebraska City (including golf, lodging and food); a painting of Pebble Beach by local artist, Nancy Heiser; and a state-of-the-art computer.
Over $40,000 was raised due the generosity of the golfers and sponsors. We look forward to another successful event next year. Watch for details.

Liver cancer is difficult to discover because symptoms do not appear until later stages of the disease. The liver is covered by the right side rib cage and small tumors are hard to detect in a physical exam. By the time tumors are large enough to feel, the cancer has often spread to other organs and is harder to treat.
Some experts recommend screening with blood tests and ultrasound for people who are at High Risk. These would include those with cirrhosis, chronic Hepatitis B or C, excessive alcohol consumption, Diabetes or inherited liver diseases like hemochromatosis and Wilson’s disease. Screening has been linked to improved survival rates.
As with any cancer, early detection is the key to the best outcome.
