Almighty and everlasting God,

Lord Jesus Christ, you humbled yourself in taking the form of a servant, and in obedience died on the cross for our salvation: give us the mind to follow you and to proclaim you as Lord and King, to the glory of God the Father. Amen.

We are now three weeks into this quite unsettling world where churches remain closed and people are required, for very good reason, to stay at home. This situation is impacting all of us in different ways.

For All Saints it is having a significant financial impact.
About half of the income for All Saints' mission and ministry activities come from: i. hall and room hire, ii. fundraising events (such as the quarterly coffee and craft events, iii. as well weekly collection plate gifts. None of which are able to happen at present. This is roughly the equivalent to £512 a week loss. However we are still receiving giving through the Parish Giving Scheme. We thank everyone who is supporting the church in this way.

alongside prayer: Three things we are doing to help the church through this challenge.

1. furloughing of staff team members

Due to the massively reduced workload around the Lifehouse Project, mainly because of the lockdown, the decision has been taken to furlough some of the paid team members and to take up the government offer for a grant to pay 80% of their payroll while they are not working. Beth, Becca and Paul have all been furloughed as of last Monday. Please pray for each of them as they step back from the project, for their families and other work commitments. Jeremy with the help of the Churchwardens and Treasurer are reviewing the financial status and the workload for the rest of the team over the coming weeks.

2. ASKING PEOPLE TO DONATE BY Standing order

If you normally donate cash or cheques using the weekly collection or numbered envelopes, we would love you to keep up your regular support. But please would you now seriously consider making future donations through the Parish Giving Scheme (if you are a UK tax payer) or by setting up a standing order? Covid-19 precautions mean that it is no longer practical for us to accept cash or cheques.

If you would like to setup a standing order please use the following details

Account name:        All Saints Church Highertown PCC.

Bank:                      Lloyds Bank, Boscawen Street,  Truro

Sort Code:              77 - 09 -12

Account number:   2 9 4 1 9 2 6 0

2. ASKING PEOPLE TO DONATE online

If during this time you would like to make a one off gift to the church you may wish to use our Justgiving service by giving online using a debit/credit card or paypal account. Click on the link here to give to the church in this way.

Supporting Good mental health

The Church of England have produced a series of reflections on how to cope with anxiety and loneliness in the face of the coronavirus pandemic, including simple Christian meditation techniques. The second is a reflection on loneliness

Day Two-Loneliness

Picture

Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted. Relieve the troubles of my heart, and bring me out of my distress. Consider my affliction and my trouble, and forgive all my sins.

Psalm 25:16-18

Loneliness is an experience that we can all relate to, but almost 1 in 5 people in the UK often or always feel lonely. The figures are higher for the elderly and for young people. If you are lonely, it would seem, you are not alone but that is unlikely to provide much comfort. We are social creatures. We need to feel connected to others.Read more.

11am, Sunday, April 5th:

Make a date with the

Lord's Prayer

By Richard Best

The people of Cornwall are being invited to join together for a shared moment of prayer on Sunday morning (5.4.20).

At 11am, everybody is invited to step outside if safe, or go to a window, and quietly say the Lord’s Prayer.

Margaret Stevens, from Mounts Bay, whose original suggestion is being taken up by churches across Cornwall, said: “I hope this can be helpful for anyone at all who feels the need to pray in a time of great anxiety, knowing that others are praying too.”

The Bishop of Truro, the Rt Revd Philip Mounstephen, said: “I think this is a wonderful idea. I believe we will each draw strength from knowing that wherever we are, and however isolated or fearful we might feel from time to time, we are united in fellowship. We will be sharing a prayer that expresses the essence of our faith, as well as our profound sense that God is the answer to our prayers. We are not alone.”

STEVE WILD: ‘MANY PRAYING FOR THE FIRST TIME’

The Revd Steve Wild, chair of the Cornwall Methodist District, said: “I am very happy to endorse this call on people to come to their front doorsteps and say the Lord’s Prayer on Sunday at 11am. During our present situation many in our land are finding themselves praying for the first time and the Lord hears all prayers.

“The Lord’s Prayer is a prayer from the lips of Jesus; it is both simple and comprehensive. We are isolated at the moment, but by taking part in this act of faith we are showing a great unity by saying this prayer and also being a witness in our community.”

CONNECTED TO GOD AND OTHERS

Sarah Yardley, the mission and ministry lead for Creation Fest, added: “During this time of challenge and isolation, it’s so important that we find creative ways to stay connected to God and others. I’m looking forward to joining with the friends across the county to stand on our doorsteps and say the Lord’s Prayer at 11am on Sunday, and can’t wait to see some of the creative ways we might find to pray together for God’s kingdom to come on earth, as it is in heaven!”

The invitation is for people across Cornwall, as well as the Isles of Scilly and the two parishes that sit both within Devon and the Diocese of Truro.

A hopeful thought from Bishop Philip: 'I was struck by a compelling thought the other day. Who might God be calling into a fresh expression and dimension of ministry through all this? Who might feel a call to step out into the new landscape of mission that might emerge as we are called to reach the young, serve the poor and care for the earth here in Cornwall? Let's be praying into that - and have our eyes open for what God might be stirring in others too.

And what might that mean for you?'

Here are some lovely Easter resources for children

church news and notices

The building maybe closed but the Church is open!

Due to the need for social distancing we now have to follow government guidelines and shut the church completely apart from a Foodbank collection service. You can read the Church of England's official statement here.

Of course, we are continuing to stay in touch regularly with those in our congregation who need special care and we encourage you to check in regularly by phone or email with those you know in the church and wider community. The church is the people, not the building.

Please pray for this aspect of our church life, especially hold in your prayers the Foodbank team, our volunteers, and those coming for help.

Foodbank still needs your help!

Picture

Last week Truro Foodbank received 532kg in food donations but gave out 1835kg! Donations are dropping off as people quite rightly make fewer trips to the supermarket, but demand foodbank services has risen as people find it more difficult to pay for bills in the midst of our economic pressures. When you head to the supermarket for your essential shopping purchases please do keep the foodbank in mind. There are donation crates in Tesco, Sainsburys and Coop.

Two local children donated 25 kg of food to Truro Foodbank yesterday. Instead of spending the money they’d been given for Easter on themselves Stanley and Vivi spent it on tinned and dried food so we are able to continue to help feed  all those people in our area who who are in food poverty.

They also made 2 beautiful cards to thank the volunteers for their hard work.

Morning Prayer

Each day Jeremy at All Saints, and Janette at Epiphany House will keep morning prayer. If you would like to join with us from home you can use the common worship website for the words and readings. Click Here

More ways to pray at home

We have set up a brand new webpage on our website where we will add prayers, reflections, sermons and other resources to help us during this time when we cannot meet in person. The webpage is here - click and check it out.

Meditations for Isolation

Picture

Our very own Anna Robinson writes contemplative meditations for the Christian Podcast service 'Nomad'. Her latest meditation is part of series she is writing on supporting the Christian's prayer life while in isolation. This first recording is a visualisation and reflection piece to help the listener go deeper into prayer and the presence of God, all whilst staying at home. You can listen to it here. Or click on the souncloud below.

Is it unusually quiet or unusually noisy?

A few thoughts to consider this week. Because God is good, he always works to bring about good in our lives, through all things, even the bad.

Picture

1. For some of us having to stay at home means things are a lot quieter than usual, and friends and family seem further away.

Picture

2. For some of us, having to stay at home means that there is a lot more activity around us than usual. In these cases it is too easy to push God aside whilst you try and attend to who and what is in front of you.

Remember Martha, who was busy in the kitchen whilst Mary was at the feet of Jesus (Luke 10). Remember that it wasn't Martha's busyness that Jesus criticised specifically, it was her inability to see that what she was undertaking in hospitality was worship. In every human need in life there is an opportunity to praise God, in every task undertaken there is an opportunity to praise God.

STAYING WELL NHS.UK

Everyone must stay at home to help stop the spread of coronavirus.

You should only leave the house for 1 of 4 reasons:

  • shopping for basic necessities, for example food and medicine, which must be as infrequent as possible
  • one form of exercise a day, for example a run, walk, or cycle – alone or with members of your household
  • any medical need, or to provide care or to help a vulnerable person
  • travelling to and from work, but only where this absolutely cannot be done from home

How to stop infection spreading

There are things you can do to help reduce the risk of you and anyone you live with getting ill with coronavirus.

Looking after your wellbeing

To help yourself stay well while you're at home:

  • stay in touch with family and friends over the phone or on social media
