Whether we are battling winter's last fury or celebrating Spring's first flowers, let's look outward with our virtues too, spotlighting the other-focused virtues of compassion, faithfulness, and mercy. We find those virtues realized in this month's heroine (Irena Sendler, who helped thousands of Jewish children escape the Warsaw ghetto in World War II). We see them exemplified in many of the women spotlighted in our very rich Women's History Month tab. Be sure to check out female inventor J.G. Cochrane in the brand-new book Josephine and Her Dishwashing Machine. Finally, let's challenge our youth to serve themselves by serving others, like Eleanor Roosevelt, Irena Sendler, and St. Patrick.
Eleanor Roosevelt: Her Path to Kindness. Helaine Becker. Illustrated by Aura Lewis. Christy Ottaviano Books, 2023. (K-2) Compassion, Courage, Love of Country, Women's History Month.
This new picture book biography of Eleanor Roosevelt is gently told: it does not gloss over the many traumas of her youth, but emphasizes her ongoing quest to summon courage in the face of adversity and act with empathy for others. This beloved first lady had a heart for those in need.

Saint Patrick the Forgiver: The History and Legends of Ireland's Bishop. Ned Bustard. IVP Kids, 2023. (1-2) Compassion, Forgiveness, Mercy, Faithfulness. The latest book on St. Patrick, this rhymed tale puts the emphasis on Patrick's forgiveness of the Irish who had enslaved him. This book does not hide St. Patrick's religious motivation, so it may be more appropriate for independent schools and schools of faith.
