July 2016

Welcome to the first e-bulletin from Calais Kitchens. As a member of the Calais Kitchens family we really value your support and want to keep you updated on the ups and downs of life here.

The last month has been….intense. 75% of the 6,000+ residents of the Calais camp observed Ramadan, which means they fasted for 18 hours a day. Nothing past the lips between 3.30am and 10.10pm. When nightfall finally came each day there were heartwarming scenes

all over camp of people from different nationalities coming together to break their fast. Plastic sheeting was laid in the roads where scores of people sat together to share food.

We’ve also expanded our space in the warehouse to house an ENORMOUS roller-table! Thanks to the very talented build team we have a true production line with a constant flow of bags stocked by dedicated volunteers flying down the line of sawn-off tent poles!

Due to the drastic increase in camp numbers and low donation levels, we had to make the extremely difficult decision to stop distributing food last week. Thankfully, after some heavy fundraising we're back in action this week. We are so grateful for all the support we’ve had to make this happen – it’s warmed our hearts and filled our shelves.

As many people in camp have taken the opportunity during Ramadan to take stock, so have we. We are standing together with them and with you to show solidarity and love, and to give a little security in the most unstable of places.

With our love & thanks for your continued support,

The Calais Kitchens Team x x x
