We want to introduce you to Bryan. Bryan started at Escuela when he was three years old. He is now five and will be graduating this year. He loves school and has learned numbers, colors, shapes and days of the week.

His parents, Zulema and Oscar, both work. Zulema is a housekeeper, and Oscar works in the kitchen of a nearby restaurant. Bryan often stays at the school with Dulce, our teacher, until one of them gets off work. Despite their long days, they never miss an evening parent meeting and often leave work mid-day to bring lunch to the class when it is their turn. Oscar painted the inside walls of the school after work one day while Bryan slept on the floor. Both parents try to have dinner together as a family and take advantage of that time to ask Bryan about his day and read to him at bedtime.

Escuela started a Parents’ Club in March. Once a month, parents come to the school after work to talk about interacting with their children at home. Miriam, a local psychologist, suggests learning activities and answers questions that arise about raising children.

In February we all enjoyed a day at the beach. While the beach is only a five-minute walk from the school, it was the first visit for many of the children. We spent the day playing and picnicking; fun was had by all!

We had two special visits this winter:

Liz Price, a PE teacher from Colorado, brought physical education supplies to the school and spent an hour with the children leading them in activities related to running, throwing and jumping. They loved it.

Tracy Fisher, an Apple-award winning preschool teacher from Chicago visited the school for two days and interacted with Dulce and the children. She read to them and talked to Dulce about teaching activities.

The children are continuing to learn about their environment. They have an ecology lesson every week with Walter. He engages them with his guitar and stories that always capture their attention. They also take turns watering the plants in the schoolyard as they run back and forth with their very small pails to ensure the plants will thrive.

In January we invited the community to visit our new location. The children gave each visitor a heart they had decorated with their names. The parents once again prepared a bountiful and traditional feast for everyone to share. Their involvement is so important to our success!
