Collect Prayer

Almighty Father, you have given your only Son to die for our sins and to rise again for our justification: grant us so to put away the leaven of malice and wickedness that we may always serve you in pureness of living and truth; through the merits of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.  Amen

ACROSS THE POND - Fr. Richard Rohr
Picture

Fr. Richard Rohr, OFM is a Franciscan of the New Mexico Province and the Founder of the Center for Action and Contemplation in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Fr. Richard serves as Academic Dean of the Living School for Action and Contemplation. He writes  daily meditations and today he writes about Hope and Suffering, "any form of contemplation is a gradual sinking into this divine fullness where hope lives. Contemplation is living in a unified field that produces in people a deep, largely non-rational, and yet calmly certain hope, which is always a surprise." You can read it in full here

SUPPORTING THE CHURCH FINANCIALLY
Picture

During the last five weeks we have each felt the impact of the lockdown in different ways. Remembering together the tragic loss of life, and the upsetting reality of not being able to be with loved ones at this time.

In recent newsletters I wrote about the significant financial impact the church has felt from closing the doors of the church. Sadly, I can now report that for the month of March this amounted to the loss of donations and room hire creating a deficit of £4,447. We will report April's figures in early May.

If you normally donate cash or cheques using the weekly collection or numbered envelopes, we would love for you to keep up your regular support. But please would you now seriously consider making future donations through the Parish Giving Scheme. You can now register on their website https://register.parishgiving.org.uk/  you'll need the church name (All Saints Highertown) and the parish code (390639122) or if you prefer you can set up a standing order? Covid-19 precautions mean that it is no longer practical for us to accept cash or cheques.

If you would like to setup a standing order please use the following details
Account name:        All Saints Church Highertown PCC.
Bank:                      Lloyds Bank, Boscawen Street,  Truro
Sort Code:              77 - 09 -12
Account number:     2 9 4 1 9 2 6 0

If during this time you would like to make a one off gift to the church you may wish to use our Justgiving service by giving online using a debit/credit card or paypal account. Click on the link here to give to the church in this way.

Supporting Good mental health

The Church of England have produced a series of reflections on how to cope with anxiety and loneliness in the face of the coronavirus pandemic, including simple Christian meditation techniques. The third is a reflection on where God is in the struggles.

Day Four-How are you?

Picture

After they had eaten and drunk at Shiloh, Hannah rose and presented herself before the Lord. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat beside the doorpost of the temple of the Lord. She was deeply distressed and prayed to the Lord, and wept bitterly. She made this vow: ‘O Lord of hosts, if only you will look on the misery of your servant, and remember me, and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a male child, then I will set him before you as a Nazirite until the day of his death. He shall drink neither wine nor intoxicants, and no razor shall touch his head.’

As she continued praying before the Lord, Eli observed her mouth. Hannah was praying silently; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard; therefore Eli thought she was drunk. So Eli said to her, ‘How long will you make a drunken spectacle of yourself? Put away your wine.’ But Hannah answered, ‘No, my lord, I am a woman deeply troubled; I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have been pouring out my soul before the Lord. Do not regard your servant as a worthless woman, for I have been speaking out of my great anxiety and vexation all this time.’ Then Eli answered, ‘Go in peace; the God of Israel grant the petition you have made to him.’

1 Samuel 1:9-17

Have you ever found yourself not knowing what to say when someone cheerily said “How are you?” Perhaps you felt awful, but didn’t like to say so? A friend of mine had this experience once when leaving church. She decided to be honest, and said that she felt terrible. The unheeding reply was “Oh – that’s good!” read more

We're still supporting people in food crisis and will do so for as long as possible. Whilst we have not run out of all food, we are running short of:

  • tinned potatoes/instant mash
  • rice
  • tinned spaghetti
  • coffee
  • pasta sauce
  • tinned fruit
  • tinned rice pudding
  • tinned custard
  • long-life milk
  • long-life fruit juice

There are food donation points at Tesco, Sainsbury's, Waitrose and the Co-op in Truro. Or you can deliver food to the church on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 09:00 to 12:00. However, please don't come just to donate food. Make sure you are synchronising your delivery with an essential trip or activity. It's important not to make additional journeys.

A shortened version of morning prayer will also be available as an audio recording each day by dialing into our dedicated phoneline 01872 306996. Phone and hear the daily readings, and call again on a Sunday and Saturday for the weekly sermon.

Items for prayer this week

  • Pray for staff and patients at Treliske and other hospitals and residents and staff in care homes. Staff desperately need more and better protective clothing and coronavirus testing.
  • Pray for our government ministers who are now called upon to lead the country in unprecedented times. We pray that they may lead with wisdom and integrity, seeking God and truth for the well-being of the nation.
  • Pray for those affected by domestic abuse, family members and any children caught up in the violence. We pray for God's protection on all involved, and a change of heart and also action by the perpetrators of violence and abuse, and we pray for a renewed energy from emergency and therapeutic support services.
  • For social workers who are having to work in difficult circumstances and particularly those who face hugely complex decisions. For local authorities who are struggling to find new foster carers and adoptive parents at a time when many people are putting big decisions on hold
  • Pray for homeless people and those who care for them, especially St Petroc's staff.
  • Pray for all those experiencing bereavement and not able to grieve in the normal way at funerals at the moment and clergy not able to care for families in the way they would wish at this time.
  • Yvonne Smith's brother in law, Laurence sadly died last week. We pray for his family at this time, that may feel the peace of God's presence.
  • We pray for the family of Alan January who passed away on Friday. The graveside funeral will be held at Baldhu Churchyard on Tuesday 28th April. Please keep his daughter Tracy in your prayers.
  • Pray for the Pastoral Team as they stay in touch with members of our community and attend to those in the local area with particular needs.
  • Pray for the Lifehouse Project Team and for those team members who have recently been furloughed. Pray for funding decisions being made by Laing Family Trusts, and the Joseph Rank Trust this coming week and the week after.
  • Pray for our team of Community Comforters - Roger, Diana, Lynne, Jill, John, Anna, Magda, Mary, Martyn, Moyra, Gyl, Lindsey, and Karen. This team have volunteered to respond to particular requests made by some of the more isolated and vulnerable members of our local community.

Meditations for Isolation

Picture

In this meditation Anna Robinson reflects on our struggles with fear, anxiety and distress. She looks at how Jesus himself felt great fear, particularly at this time of Easter. Then, drawing on the wisdom of James Finley, Anna leads us through a stilling exercise and meditation where we can bring our deepest fears and distress to Jesus. Through this we hope together we can find freedom from our experience of the tyranny of fear. This episode is the perfect follow up to Jeremy's sermon preached on Easter Day. STAYING WELL NHS.UK

Everyone must stay at home to help stop the spread of coronavirus.

You should only leave the house for 1 of 4 reasons:

  • shopping for basic necessities, for example food and medicine, which must be as infrequent as possible
  • one form of exercise a day, for example a run, walk, or cycle – alone or with members of your household
  • any medical need, or to provide care or to help a vulnerable person
  • travelling to and from work, but only where this absolutely cannot be done from home
