Greetings,

It's been some years since I've sent out a newsletter. Glad to reconnect and hope everyone is easing into 2024!

I wanted to send out an invite for a Winter Yoga Nidra Series starting next week in Sebastopol, CA. The classes will be held at Open Sky Retreat Space on Mondays from 10:30am-12:00pm. We'll be working with themes of deep listening, nervous system restoration, winter dreaming, and total system reset. If you are feeling worn down post-holidays and in need of some restful time for yourself, come drop-in to a class or join for the full series. More details are below along with some virtual offerings and a recipe for building ojas (primal vigor or vitality) during these colder months.

As for a brief life update - I recently finished my masters in public health, remodeled a tiny home, and am currently working on a research project for youth rites of passage and outdoor health education. Lots of big changes. I'm sure for us all. We'll see what this next season brings!

Stay cozy and Happy New Year.

WINTER YOGA NIDRA

Picture

January 8th, 15th, 22nd & 29th @ 10:30am-12:00pm

We'll start each class with a cup of tea and settle into the space. Open Sky is a beautiful sanctuary that has a long history of retreats and the quiet surrounding nature is conducive for contemplative practices. We'll begin with some gentle, guided movement followed by 45-minutes of yoga nidra (which is done laying down with your eyes closed). The class will end with a short seated meditation and you can stay to enjoy the grounds until 12:30pm. There is a nice loop around the property to walk or sit in quietude with the incredible Balinese art.

Yoga Nidra, or 'yogic sleep' is considered a state of consciousness rather than a practice itself. The aim is to remain awake and aware, observe, deeply relax, heal, and restore. For more background and research check out this article, The Origin and Clinical Relevance of Yoga Nidra.

Classes are $22 each or $88 for series. Please email me to register.

RECIPE CORNER

Jar O' Ojas

This recipe is a winner from Kate O'Donnell's Everyday Ayurveda Guide to Self-Care. Not only does it build ojas, but is considered an aphrodisiac and is used in Ayurveda as a rasayana, for rejuvenation of the deepest bodily tissues.

Ingredients:

2 pinches saffron thread

1/4 tsp ground cinnamon

1/4 tsp ground cardamom

1/4 tsp ground ginger

1 cup ghee

1 1/2 cups pitted dates cut into halves

  • Use a mortar and pestle to grind the saffron into a fine powder. Mix in the other ground spices.
  • Warm the ghee in a saucepan at a low heat until liquid and add the spice mixture.
  • Pack the dates tightly into a clean and dry 16 oz. mason jar.
  • Pour the spiced ghee over the dates. Put on the lid and shake well.
  • Let the dates soak for at least a day before enjoying. Store at room temperature up to 3 months. So so good!
