NEWS FROM ALL SAINTS Social Justice update update from joff The words above from Eugene Peterson’s translation of the Bible, The Message, give me great hope at this time of year. Not only are they the groundings of the Christian faith, they are a message of hope for all in this difficult time. The story of God that we are part of is one that says, and believes, that God loves the world (John 3:16), that he is with us (Matthew 1:23), and that he became flesh and blood, and moved into the neighbourhood (John 1:14). The story of Advent should help us realise that all of these facts are not simply true for the believer, or for the privileged, but true for everyone. The Christmas story paints a picture of God with the family on the run from abuse, the overlooked key workers in the fields, the mystic from the far away land, and even the animals in the barn. This December at All Saints we have tried to incorporate elements of care and support that will share with those around us that God, and the church, is with us all. We have done this through raising gifts for The Cornwall Refuge Trust, working with Transformation Cornwall to share information on the support that all people can get over the winter months, creating the outdoor, life-size, nativity scene to remind people that God is with us, and supporting the work of Truro Foodbank, Cornwall Children’s Clothes Bank, and Acts 435, and that is just what I am involved in, not including the amazing advent packs that Alice and Sam have put together and all of the hard work of the rest of our community. Remember that this Christmas, no matter where you are, who you are, or how you are, this time of year we celebrate that God moved into the neighbourhood to be with us. what's been happening at Ash? Truro Foodbank Thanks to the very generous donations of food and money by the public, and by schools and churches at harvest time, Truro Foodbank has been blessed with enough stock to meet the increased number of people being referred to them. In the financial year 2018/19 they distributed 33 tonnes of food from Truro Foodbank, in the year 2020/21 the figure is on course to be close to 60 tonnes. If you are struggling with food this Christmas, or know someone in the Truro area (TR1-TR6) who is, please email
[email protected] or contact them on 07721 711669. Cornwall Refuge Trust Friday the 18th of December is the day that Cornwall Refuge Trust will be collecting the gifts that the All Saints community have so generously given. As we contemplate the nativity story and the work happening in and around Truro this winter, let us remember the words from Jesus, "Where I am you may be also." (John 14:3) If God is with all, so there we should be to. "From east to west, from shore to shore, Let earth awake and sing The holy child whom Mary bore, The Christ, the Lord, the King! To shephard poor the Lord most high, Great shephard was revealed; While angels choirs sang joyously Above the midnight field. All glory be to God above, And on the earth be peace To all who long to taste his love, Till time itself shall cease." Caelius Sedulius
