Milkweed guide

With so many milkweed

which one is right for me?

Regionally selected seed is best.

Aquatic milkweed (Asclepias perennis)

USDA Hardiness Zone: 5b - 10a

Region: East Texas to Central Florida. Coastal South Carolina. All up and down the Mississippi River Basin from the Gulf of Mexico to the confluence of the Ohio River.

Habitat: Aquatic gardens. Does well in containers. Tolerates part shade. Tough plant! Can grow in medium wet soil, does not need a bog to be successful. If you have high humidity in the summer, this could be the plant for you. Seed germinates in summer, at very warm temps, rather than during spring rain.

Bloom timing: April-October

Flower color: white

Butterfly weed (Asclepias tuberosa)

USDA Hardiness Zone: 3a - 10b

Region: Heavily dispersed throughout the eastern half of the United States. Sparsely seen in the western states but common in gardens and southern longitudes from Denver, CO to Prescott, AZ.

Habitat: Diverse habitats from seasonal stream beds in the southwest to forest edges of the northeast. Prized in the garden for having a very high value to pollinators seeking nectar.

Bloom timing: May-August

Flower color: orange (red to yellow in wild populations)

Showy milkweed (Asclepias speciosa)

USDA Hardiness Zone: 2b - 9b

Region: Great Plains. Yosemite National Park to Oklahoma City is the southern boundary. Northern limit is well into central Canada.

Habitat: Meadows, stream banks, irrigation ditches and gardens. Maximize the flowering potential of this long living perennial by planting seedlings in the ground by late summer or early fall.

Bloom timing: June-July

Flower color: pink with white elements

Common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca)

USDA Hardiness Zone: 3a - 8a

Region: East of the Great Plains. Mostly concentrated in the north so it can rest in the winter. Many common milkweed plants have naturalized around Kyiv, Ukraine and other European nations.

Habitat: Meadows, stream banks, irrigation ditches and gardens. Maximize the flowering potential of this long living perennial by planting seedlings in the ground by late summer or early fall.

Bloom timing: June-July

Flower color: greenish-pink to rosy pink to purplish-pink

Arizona milkweed (Asclepias angustifolia)

USDA Hardiness Zone: 9b - 13b

Region: Tuscon, AZ to Oaxaca, Mexico.

Habitat: Riparian riverbanks in the Sonoran Desert. Any hot shady place with wet to medium wet soil. Loves the heat! Easy to grow anywhere during summer.

Antelope horns (Asclepias asperula asperula)

Some of the most successful populations occur in exposed earth where a highway was cut through a hillside. They prefer the side of the hill facing the spring sun. Occasionally seen on flat land.
