Exchequer Returns Continue to Support Case for Significant Growth in Capital Expenditure

Commenting on the release of yesterday’s (3rd January 2018) Fiscal Monitor, Ian Talbot, Chief Executive of Chambers Ireland said,

“The strong taxation performance recorded for the year of 2017 is a welcome indicator of continued economic growth and stability.

Reflecting on these results, the case to increase investment in infrastructure and public services remains very strong.

This would consolidate Ireland’s current business environment as we evolve our economic strategy to enable us to continue to grow strongly even as we face future uncertainties."

The Department of Business, Enterprise and Innovation

has announced a new round of the tariff suspension/quota schemes and is calling for applications from manufacturers in the chemicals, microelectronic and related sectors. The tariff suspension scheme offers the possibility for such companies to import raw materials, components or intermediate products from outside the European Union free from tariff duty, if the item cannot be sourced in the EU. The tariff quota scheme is designed to address shortages in the availability of required materials within the EU and can be applied for in the same way as suspensions.

Closing date and time for the receipt of the next round of applications is 5.30p.m. on Friday, 26 January 2018. Applications should be sent by e-mail to [email protected] and posted to the Department. Please note that late or incomplete applications will not be accepted.

The suspension of duties on these applications, if they are successful, will come into effect 12 months after the application is made.

Further information on the Tariff Suspension or Quota Scheme may be found here:

Please see final News Alert on Green Public Procurement (GPP) for 2017 from the EU GPP. The newsletter covers a range of procurement issues and also includes a link to a number of useful ‘how to’ videos. Following on from the last workshop, the Minister has issued a press release in support of Green public procurement. We will be building on this to establish greater awareness and encouragement for GPP among senior management across the public sector in 2018.

We will be holding the next of our GPP4Growth stakeholder workshops early this year, covering the topic of ecolabels.  There are also a number of other developments, events and training that will take place in 2018 as we progress the issues raised in our last workshop.
