Spring Update, Volunteers Needed!

Picture

After a year of virtual tutoring in 2020-21, we are excited to announce that Los Ayudantes is back in person at both Kennedy and McKinley middle schools (for fully vaccinated individuals).  But, equally exciting, we continue to offer virtual tutoring options for those who are still interested. In fact, for many working professionals, the virtual tutoring option opens up possibilities for helping underserved students that otherwise wouldn't be an option given their time constraints.

Los Ayudantes tutors have been working at Kennedy this year in both a virtual and in-class format, but now we're starting up the program again at McKinley after Spring Break.  Starting the week of April 4th we are looking especially for new, in-person volunteers at McKinley!  This might be a great opportunity to try out volunteering during April and May to decide if you'd like to tutor during the 2022-23 school year.

Volunteers Needed!

We are currently focusing on a 1:1 tutoring ratio with teacher-nominated students that need the extra attention.  After a year and a half of virtual learning, many students really need our help!  We work primarily with students who are long-term, English Learners that need help with reading, fluency, academic English/grammar, and life skills/mentoring.

Volunteering one day a week is all that's needed to make a real difference in the lives of Redwood City School District middle schoolers. You will become an important, trusted adult in the students’ lives when you make this commitment to tutor a student.

Training and orientation are provided.

We hope you decide to volunteer with us!  Below are the days/times available at our both schools.  We are still accepting volunteers at Kennedy if those times work best for you.

Strategies in Reading Aloud to Middle Schoolers

Los Ayudantes tutors often take turns reading aloud with their student to practice and model fluency.  We encourage our tutors to take breaks during reading to ask comprehension questions for further engagement in the reading passage.

Follow the link below for a great article about reading aloud strategies for middle schoolers.  This is written for teachers, but we can utilize the same read aloud strategies during our tutoring:  https://www.edutopia.org/article/why-reading-aloud-middle-school-students-works
