Congratulations Joy Kavapalu on winning 1st place in the Kaha Nui Summit Essay Contest!

The Kaha Nui Summit is held every year in November at BYU-Provo. Joy serves as president of the Bingham High School Island Teens Against Tobacco group.

"My Polynesian culture has helped me strive for my highest potential by providing a strong foundation of hard work, morality and perseverance in addition to motivating me to bring honor and glory to my family. My American-Pacific Islander background has given me the unique opportunity to see the world in a perspective much different from many of my peers.

I have seen the trials, turmoil and tragedies that are an inherent part of life, particularly that of ours. However, it was during these difficult times that I have seen the genuine fellowship and tenacity of our culture. The principles of comradery, compassion and cohesion are instilled in every aspect of our people and it is what motivates me to become better than I am and to aim for a higher capacity than I thought to be achievable."

~ Exerpt from Joy Kavapuluʻs winning essay.

ITAT Anti-Tobacco Ad Contest Rules:

  1. How long do the video ads need to be? about 30 seconds
  2. What do the 30 second video ads need to be about? At least one of the following:
    1. Big Tobacco is up to it again with e-cigarettes: telling half-truths to sell their addictive product. Currently, there are no restrictions on what they can or can't say in their ads about e-cigarettes. A guy named Mitch Zeller with the FDA recently compared it to the "wild, wild west." How does that make you feel, cowpoke?
    2. Let's put Big Tobacco's dirty laundry out there for everybody to see! Cigarettes kill somebody every 6 seconds in America. That's over 1,300 Americans daily. 1 out of 5 Americans smoke today - and cigarettes will kill 2 of those 5 people directly.
    3. Can you name 7,000 different chemicals? Maybe 700? How about just 7? Well, know who can name 7,000 chemicals? Big Tobacco! And they put more than that many into each and every cigarette that they produce. That includes more than 65 cancer causing chemicals and over 101 classified poisons.
    4. Big Tobacco sells cigarettes. Cigarettes kill people. People who used to be their customers. Then, they need new customers - and who are they after? Youth: who they kindly refer to as "replacement smokers". In 1978, a tobacco industry executive said that "the base of our business is the high school student."
  3. Can I work in a group? Yes
  4. Can I submit more than one video? Yes
  5. Entries that, in the discretion and judgment of the sponsors, violate any of the standards above will be disqualified.
  6. Rules subject to change without notice
